Department Summary As an essential partner in the University’s educational, research, and public service mission, the University of Oregon Libraries enriches the student learning experience, encourages exploration and research at all levels, and contributes to advancements in access to scholarly resources. The University of Oregon Libraries is the only Association of Research Libraries (ARL) member in Oregon. The library is a member of the Orbis Cascade Alliance, SPARC, Center for Research Libraries, DuraSpace, the Council on Library and Information Resources, Coalition for Networked Information, EDUCAUSE, and other major organizations. The Libraries is also a member of Oregon WIN, a consortium of universities and community colleges that operates an educational broadband service network. In addition to a full range of research library programs, the UO Libraries provides many of the university's central educational technology services, including learning management system administration, classroom technology support, broadcast-quality video production, distance education delivery, streaming media, educational technology support, and technology-related faculty development and training.
Library Technology Services (LTS) manages library infrastructure and provides a wide range of technology services that directly support the UO Libraries and University mission. These include core library infrastructure and systems, application development and integration, and computer support services for library facilities, labs, services and personnel. LTS also partners with technology-intensive Library units such as the Center for Media and Educational Technologies, Digital Scholarship Services, and Data Services, and the Price Science Commons and Library to provide integrated services and solutions in support of the University’s mission.
Position Summary The Director of Library Technology Services (LTS) is a creative, strategic, and experienced technology leader charged with overseeing and directing the LTS department, which includes three teams covering Core Systems and Infrastructure, Applications Development and Integration, and Computer Support Services. The Director oversees major systems, operations, and services for the Libraries, including the library management system, discovery platform, digital repository systems, the interlibrary loan system, various applications for library-wide functions, and staff and public computing. S/he will also provide leadership and take responsibility for the functioning and maintenance of the Libraries’ main web site and interfaces.
In collaboration with the Head of Digital Scholarship Services, the Head of Data Services, and the Director for the Center for Media and Educational Technologies (CMET), s/he will also develop or modify new and existing infrastructure to support technology-intensive programs and services such as data management, digital scholarship, and digital publishing. This position collaborates closely with technology partners across the campus, as well as with the Libraries’ research and instructional librarians to integrate appropriate technology into library and academic support services.
The incumbent will oversee LTS budgets, policies, purchasing, licensing, and operations, and will supervise a group of talented librarians and technologists to help the Libraries carry out its technology-intensive strategies. The incumbent will enhance direct technology services for staff and users by developing goals and measures to assess program success.
This position is an excluded, non-tenure-track faculty position, expected to contribute to faculty governance activities within the Library and the University and to engage in professional development and service activities as appropriate. This is a full-time, 12-month faculty position with the rank of Associate Librarian. The position reports to the Associate Dean of Libraries/Chief Academic Technology Officer.
Minimum Requirements • ALA-accredited MLS degree or its equivalent. • Five years or more of experience managing library information technology, systems, and services.
Professional Competencies • Demonstrated experience in deploying digital technologies, applications, reporting, and utility tools. • Demonstrated personnel management experience, including hiring, training, and evaluation of staff. • Demonstrated experience with budgeting, planning, and/or project management, including the ability to prioritize and complete tasks in relation to goals and objectives. • Demonstrated knowledge of issues and trends related to information technologies. • Working knowledge and/or experience managing Web sites, applications, and digital resources. • Evidence of excellent oral, written, interpersonal communication skills. • Ability to pass a background check. • Ability to support and enhance a diverse, collaborative learning and work environment. • Commitment to excellence in provision of services. • Record of professional engagement and service.
Preferred Qualifications • Additional graduate degree, preferably in relevant subject area. • Extensive experience in administration and management in academic libraries. • Experience with Ex Libris’s Alma/Primo systems, OCLC’s ILLiad system, and library digitization projects. • Knowledge of Web technologies, standards, and software; operating systems; library information technology standards and protocols; proxy servers and remote patron authentication; database design, administration and reporting; common programming and scripting languages; IR systems; software development projects; media asset management systems; and metadata standards. • Demonstrated knowledge of IT security issues and their implications in professional practice. • ITIL or other IT certifications a plus.
