Detailed Job Description
As a member of the Student Affairs Sr. Vice President’s Suite, the Financial Analyst is responsible for essential operation functions including budgetary, finance, compliance, internal controls and human resource functions and workflows within the division of Student Affairs. The Analyst will develop complex financial and human resource reports for forecasting and result analysis for multiple department cost centers, including a variety of revenue streams, operating expenses, capital and restricted fund accounts. The role will assist in resource scenario planning in collaboration with divisional leadership as well as within various departments. The Analyst will assist in communicating new and existing practices to division finance support staff.
Reporting to the Director of Operations, the position requires a high degree of financial knowledge, accounting principles and practices, resource data compilation and manipulation, trend identification and meaningful data report construction. Due to access to various private and protected data sources, professionalism, discretion, confidentiality, follow-through, autonomy, independent action, self-management, attention to detail, communication and problem solving skills are required to produce and maintain reports that will advise the dynamic and evolving Student Affairs team. The incumbent will maintain and enrich working relationships with a broad range of internal and external university constituents and partners.
Supports financial planning and operational development for fiscal and human resources through variance analyses, current vs budgeted tracking, change over time, and revenue analyses. Prepares scenario recommendations in collaboration with Director of Operations.
Performs and reviews budget transfers, journal entries and projections, coordinating actions to adjust balances and maintain appropriate internal controls for >$25 M division operating budget as well as restricted, endowed, capital and project accounts.
Coordinates and tracks human resource transactions. Provides salary and FTE ad hoc research, analyses and scenarios advisement for senior leaders.
Interfaces daily as a resource for various financial and HR support staff, budget managers, senior leaders as well as university partners. Resolves issues and discrepancies identified. Answers related questions and provides input regarding forms and tasks. Reviews forms for accuracy and report construction. Assists Director in disseminating information to new and existing staff regarding procedure and process improvements. Communicates with appropriate internal and external administrative offices to ensure established procedures are followed.
Using knowledge of university systems, policies and procedures as well as industry best practices, accesses financial and human resources reports, analyzes complex financial and human resource information, extracts and defines relevant information, identifies anomalies and patterns, compiles meaningful data, identifies trends and constructs customized reports to aid management’s data driven decisions.
Supports annual budgetary request and hearing processes, fee structure adjustments, salary merit planning and resource allocations.
Responsible for financial, procurement, payroll and HR transactions and reconciliations, monthly and quarterly projections, journal entries and budget change transactions, year-end closing and annual budget worksheet compilations. Ensures that expenditures for budgets are monitored and that reports are prepared to maintain balanced accounts, including controls for salary and effort reporting.
Works towards revenue maximization by understanding and overseeing the use of various funding sources within the division. Interprets and reviews financial data to evaluate and determine financial performance and options to assist leadership in making overall business decisions.
Participates on division and university committees as assigned. Participates in professional development opportunities to gain and maintain in-depth knowledge of university best, practice financial and human resources policies and procedures.
Performs back-up to Director of Operations.
Other projects as assigned.
Required Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration, management of information systems, human resources or closely related field
4-6 years progressively responsible related accounting, financial and/or human resources reporting and analysis experience in complex, fast-paced, dynamic organization
Proficiency with computerized financial and/or human resources information enterprise systems, office productivity software, electronic calendaring, email, word processing, databases, spreadsheets, graphic presentation software and internet research
Demonstrated experience coordinating complex projects, working efficiently/effectively with large volumes of detailed information
Experience working as strong individual and team contributor with detail orientation and follow-through to meet goals and objectives
Experience with multi-million dollar budget
Excellent time management skills
Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines simultaneously
Experience analyzing workflows, diagnosing redundancies and identifying solutions
Ability to manage ambiguity
Ability to interpret technical and detailed guidelines, policies and procedures, as well as, explain or describe moderately complex information and presentation materials
Ability to compile, maintain, synthesize and summarize data to concisely deliver cohesive and logical synopsis
Strong interpersonal and written communication skills; effectively communicating with broad and culturally diverse constituent groups

Required Minimum Education Level
MS/MA, accounting, finance, MIS, business administration or closely related field
Affinity for organizational change and evolution
Advanced computer competency with Microsoft Office products Word, Excel (pivot, power pivot, formulas, functions, charts, graphs), Powerpoint, and Outlook, Adobe programs
Previous experience with Oracle, Kronos, Kenexa-Brassring, SIS and similar enterprise systems
Previous experience in university accounting or finance organization
Understanding of deaf culture, ASL or willingness to learn
