Advertised Summary Job Description: *** This is a full-time position funded by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation. Continuation of employment is contingent on availability of funding. ***
The Columbia Institute for Ideas and Imagination (CIII) will provide a platform in which a younger generation of scholars and creative artists will work alongside more established scholars under the aegis of the Institute to produce innovative research, writing, and art that will introduce new perspectives into the University and enrich ties between US and non-US institutions of higher learning. The Institute will add strength to the Columbia Global Centers networks. It will also contribute, both directly and indirectly, to the core pedagogic functions of the University, in particular, the Global Core Curriculum.
The Stavros Niarchos Public Humanities Initiative will connect cultural and intellectual entrepreneurs and activists in Greece to faculty, students and staff at Columbia University with expertise, resources or interests that match theirs. Through the Institute, and partner centers such as the Heyman Center for the Humanities on the Morningside Campus, participants active in Greece will also have the opportunity to pursue their concerns and meet people from other countries engaged in similar questions and pursuits. The Initiative will bring together scholars, artists, digital humanities experts and not-for-profit administrators to combine theoretical concerns and practical everyday challenges such as exhibition planning, researching topics of future activity, identifying and accessing online open source tools for web design and management.
The result will affirm the value of transnational cooperation between the agents of cultural and intellectual change in a country on the front line of the European crisis and Columbia University. Its value points two ways: to the participants from Greece, it offers a means of enriching and developing their work, adding value to a model of civic engagement and job creation that is vital for the country's future; for Columbia, it provides an example of precisely the injection into American academia of externally driven intellectual vitality that the Institute has been set up to generate. For the Institute for Ideas and Imagination in particular, it will enable a robust public humanities platform to be established from the outset, with close linkages to the main Morningside Heights campus of the university.
Located in New York, and working in close cooperation with the Director of the Columbia Institute for Ideas and Imagination, the administrator will have the day-to-day responsibility for the running, evolution, dissemination and ultimate success of the Public Humanities Initiative.
