As a member of a service oriented team of Human Resource professionals the Human Resources Generalist is responsible for fostering and supporting a workplace that supports the goals of Bucknell University. With a primary focus on the University's current total compensation efforts, this role will also deliver Human Resource solutions in a number of key areas beyond compensation, such as employee relations, policy development, and managing leaves of absence.
Reporting to the Director of Human Resource Services, the Human Resources Generalist will partner with other members of the HR team, and work collaboratively with all levels of management and employees to ensure that Bucknell's programs, policies, and practices support the diversity and inclusion goals of the University. Human Resources supports the University's mission of excellence in teaching, critical thinking and intellectual exploration through strategic innovation and comprehensive services.
Key Responsibilities: Compensation: • Provide needed support and expertise to enhance and further develop current compensation programs and services. • Assist the Compensation Manager with policy development, projects, and procedures. • Analyze data, prepare documents and spreadsheets, organize communication materials and other assignments as needed in support of compensation initiatives. • Support the annual staff merit process by training and working collaboratively with compensation pool managers. Review audit reports and assist with employee communications. • Assist with compensation surveys which includes exporting data for participation in surveys, uploading survey results, and reviewing individual job profiles to develop position benchmark data. Assist with maintenance of benchmarks in the HRIS. • Maintain data integrity in Bucknell's compensation management system. • Assist with researching and approving one-time payments, supplemental payments, additional jobs, allowances and other pay practices. • Coordinate workforce and talent management efforts with clients relative to establishing solid promotion rationales, collaborating with Compensation on offers, salary actions, and audits. Serve as a compensation approver in the recruitment management system.
Policy Management and Administration: • Review, research, create and update HR policies. Include applicable University stakeholders and other campus constituents during the review process as appropriate. Policy administration responsibilities may include training, communication and evaluation. • Stay current on federal, state and case law changes and actively monitor labor law updates and for changes that may affect HR processes, policies or procedures.
Employee Relations and Performance Improvement: • Identify and analyze employee relations situations and recommend appropriate employment action to maintain a productive and equitable work environment. • Working collaboratively with an identified group of University employees, conduct timely and thorough investigations, prepare complete and accurate investigation reports with recommended solutions to grievances and policy violations. • Insure equitable utilization of coaching, performance improvement, and progressive disciplinary processes by providing timely and accurate advice to managers and employees. • Manage disciplinary actions within departments/divisions to ensure the consistent, uniform, fair and equitable application of University policies and procedures. • Support the development and strategic implementation of policies, procedures and tools to support performance management, communication and relationship building while fostering positive relationships between employees and managers. • Partner with Training and Organizational Development Manager to create and deliver solutions to managers and their departments. • Align training solutions to organizational problems and priorities. Conduct training for clients on general human resource topics.
Leave of Absence Administration: • Assist with the interpretation and administration of all leave programs and policies in accordance with applicable federal and state employment laws. • Support members of the Benefits and HRIS team with the administration of all leaves of absence including Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), American's with Disabilities Act (ADA), personal leaves of absence and short/long-term disability, focusing on complex cases and interpretation of regulations. • Lead or assist in the development and implementation of policies, forms, procedures related to leaves of absence. • Collaborate with employees and department managers to assist in processing, evaluating and responding to ADA, FMLA and other requests for accommodation or absence. • Maintain thorough knowledge of ADA, FMLA and other leave of absence benefits to effectively serve as a liaison between staff, supervisors, department heads and the University.
Minimum Qualifications: • A bachelor's degree and 4-6 years' of related HR generalist experience. • Demonstrated ability to use applicable technology (i.e. HRIS systems, Compensation Management Systems) to gather, interpret, organize, and present data. An advanced level of technical proficiency with MS Excel spreadsheet software, and general proficiency with MS Word and Powerpoint. • Demonstrated analytical skills including the ability to effectively interpret and communicate technical information to a variety of audiences (faculty, staff, administrators, executives). • Previous experience assisting with employee relations investigations, action and follow-up. • Experience developing, writing, communicating and effectively administering policies and procedures. • Knowledge of ADA and FMLA compliance. • Superior effective verbal and written communication skills, interpersonal skills and the ability to present effectively to small and large groups and facilitate discussion. • Demonstrated sound judgment and critical thinking skills; ability to manage multiple priorities and administer broad range of tasks including resolving complaints, coaching and counseling managers and employees on policies and procedures. • Ability to collaborate, influence and command the respect and confidence of campus partners and have the capacity to deal with a wide range of relationships and situations. • Strong organizational skills; evidence of self-motivation; demonstrated ability to plan, schedule and work both independently and in teams within a service oriented organization. • Demonstrated success managing multiple projects and competing priorities while balancing the need for quality with meeting deadlines in a busy, fast paced, work environment
Preferred Qualifications: • HR certification (PHR, SPHR, SHRM-CP, SHRM-SCP, CCP) • Experience in higher education or a service-oriented organization
