The Ohio State University College of Engineering invites applications for the position of NetJets Chair of Aviation Modernization, an industry-supported tenure track position with rank of Associate Professor or Full Professor with tenure. Successful candidates in this position will have the opportunity to lead The Ohio State University in its mission towards contributing to the modernization of the United States National Airspace System through research focusing on implementation and optimization of NextGen technologies and policies including, but not limited to focus areas in systems engineering, data analytics, human factors, and safety.
This position will be affiliated with the Center for Aviation Studies (CAS), http://aviation.osu.edu, an interdisciplinary research and academic center within the College of Engineering. The Center for Aviation Studies is home to the university's aviation undergraduate degree programs, aviation-related graduate and professional research activities, and industry and community aviation outreach programming. The Center for Aviation Studies is a member of the FAA's Consortium for NextGen – Next Generation Air Traffic Management System (NEXTOR II), the FAA Center of Excellence Partnership to Enhance General Aviation Safety, Accessibility and Sustainability (PEGASAS), and a member of the FAA's Center for Excellence in Unmanned Aerial Systems (ASSURE), and the FAA's Center for Excellence in Technical Training and Human Performance (COESOAR – Center of Excellence Solutions for Operational Aviation Research). The Center is home to more than $2.75M in research activity, more than 250 undergraduate majors, and is closely partnered with the Ohio State University Airport, a fully owned and operated FAR Part 139 certificated General Aviation Reliever airport facility, and the OSU Flight Education division, a FAR Part 141 flight school curriculum, which educates more than 100 Center for Aviation Studies students towards their FAA pilot certificates, using a fleet of fully-owned aircraft, some with NextGen technologies on board.
The Ohio State University College of Engineering comprises more than 300 faculty members, offers 15 graduate degree programs in engineering and architecture, and is home to a number of federally-supported research centers, state-supported research and commercialization centers of excellence, and industrial consortia. The College's annual research expenditures were $129M in 2016, and comprise a key component to the University's position as 10th among public universities nationally in research expenditures and 6th national in industrial research expenditures. The College continues to aggressively support multi-department, interdisciplinary initiatives in aviation-related research. Aviation and aerospace research is among the top research and strategic hiring priorities in the College.
The position will be based at the Columbus, Ohio campus of The Ohio State University. The Ohio State University, a land-grant university, is ranked 20th among US universities in total research expenditures. Also, it is third in the nation among all universities in industry-funded research expenditures, with nearly half of this research conducted in the College of Engineering.
