DUTIES: The Associate Labor Counsel who holds this position is expected to manage a broad range of issues, primarily for the Health Science Center of Brooklyn, Downstate Medical Center campus within the State University system, with particular emphasis in labor and employment law in a unionized workforce environment. The Associate Labor Counsel will represent the campus in labor arbitrations, and state and federal administrative hearings regarding employment and student matters in addition to coordinating responses to investigations by bodies like, EEOC, NYSDHR, OCR and other agencies. The Associate Labor Counsel will serve as liaison to the NYS Attorney General's Office in litigation arising in labor and employment contexts, and other matters as warranted. Familiarity with NYS contracts and procurement procedures, affiliation agreements, graduate medical education and student affairs, all within the environment of academic medical center, is preferred. This position will report locally to the Senior Managing counsel in the Brooklyn Regional Office. All the attorneys in the Office of General Counsel report to SUNY's Senior Vice Chancellor & General Counsel in Albany, New York. (DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES ARE NOT LIMITED TO THE ABOVE POSITION DESCRIPTION) QUALIFICATIONS: EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: The Associate Labor Attorney will have a J.D. degree from an accredited law school and admission to the New York State Bar (or eligibility for admission within six months) in addition to strong writing, research, advocacy, negotiating, interpersonal skills and the ability to manage a significant workload of labor and employment matters with much independence and responsibility. The successful candidate will possess significant (preferably 10 years) recent legal experience in labor and employment, including labor arbitration, negotiation of separation agreement and settlement cases, higher education, healthcare and/or a government environment. Some travel to Albany and other locations for hearings and meetings will be necessary.
