Posting Summary: The University of Virginia's Blandy Experimental Farm seeks a full-time arborist to oversee care of the woody plant collection of the State Arboretum of Virginia. Blandy Experimental Farm is a 700-acre University of Virginia ecological field station located in the northern Shenandoah Valley, about 10 miles east of Winchester and 60 miles west of Washington, D.C. The State Arboretum of Virginia, located within Blandy Experimental Farm, is a public garden displaying more than 5500 trees and shrubs. It contains a broad diversity of plants from around the world with particularly rich collections of conifers, oaks, maples and boxwoods. Prominent horticultural features include a large ginkgo grove, an allee of cedars-of-Lebanon, and a 350 m lane lined with flowering dogwoods.
We are seeking an arborist to carry out and direct care for the woody plant collection. As the leader of a 4-person team, the arborist will oversee collections care, propagation, planting, and record-keeping for the collection, as well as maintain the overall appearance of the Arboretum. The arborist will develop routine maintenance plans for the collection, direct and carry out plant care using resident staff and contractual services, and mitigate tree-related hazards and emergencies. The arborist will support the broader research, education and outreach activities of Blandy Experimental Farm. The arborist will supervise three full time employees, two landscape specialists skilled in plant care and propagation, and a grounds coordinator in charge of equipment maintenance and mowing.
Applicants will possess at least three years experience in tree care, have at least two years experience in greenhouse and nursery practices, and must become certified by the International Society of Arboriculture, within the first year of employment. Applicants must have knowledge of integrative pest management, will be required to obtain a Commercial Pesticide Applicator's license after hiring if they do not have it already, and must have two years of experience supervising other employees. A bachelor's degree in horticulture, forestry or a related scientific field is preferred.

New employees will be required to become ISA certified as an arborist, and licensed as a Commercial Pesticide Applicator within the first year of employment.
