The Education Technology Specialist assists in the systematic development of the learning and curriculum management systems at Washington University School of Medicine (WUSM), through ongoing information gathering about learning and teaching needs. The Education Technology Specialist will expand and enhance the Office of Medical Student Education’s online presence through website design, development, and implementation. This position will combine education technology and instructional design with knowledge of technical tools and solutions to help develop and support products that serve the mission of the medical school. The individual in this position will work collaboratively with students, faculty, staff and departments to conceptualize and implement education technology solutions. This position will assist in investigating and adapting to emerging needs related to instructional technology and design in medical education. The individual in this position will work on a variety of simultaneous projects and initiatives.
PRIMARY DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Supports the LMS platform and other educational tools and classroom-enhancing technologies for students, faculty, staff and departments.
Designs and develops online and multimedia elements for courses.
Conducts research to assist faculty in selecting the most effective and appropriate technology tools based on best practices in online instructional design and teaching.
Trains faculty in the use of education technology and instructional design strategies using current research and best practices.
Creates information architecture for new or redesigned websites. Structures website content and navigation according to usability and accessibility best practices and business goals.
Produces copy, art and other elements throughout the website development process.
Designs, programs, tests and documents web applications used by the medical school.
Assists in the coordination of all aspects of technology.
Assist the Manager of Education Technology in developing annual equipment, software and maintenance expenditures.
Interact with vendors and assist in the selection and implementation of applications and hardware.
Maintain accurate records of inventory, purchases, and service agreements.
Support lecture capture and video archiving services.
Provide emergent IT technical support and back up.
Keep informed about education technology options within the medical school to provide awareness of new platforms that could improve performance on on-going basis.
Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, establishing personal networks, benchmarking best practices, and participating in professional work groups.
Other duties as assigned.
Applicant Special Instructions:
Comfortable office setting. Required to commute between several buildings on the WUSM campus including additional schools, hospitals, research labs, auditoriums and small group teaching spaces. Some lifting and moving, not to exceed 40 lbs.
High school or GED required; minimum of 2 years of experience in some aspect of the field of Information Technology required; certification or a degree in some aspect of Information Technology may also substitute for required experience on a year-for-basis
Bachelor's degree in Educational/Instructional Technology, Information Technology, or Computer Science with 3 - 5 years of experience providing support for educational technologies, preferably in a higher education environment.
Strong technical understanding of educational learning and curriculum management systems and related tools.
Technical skills will include a broad-based understanding of web-based technologies and operating system functionality. Including:
Windows, MacOS, iOS, and Android
Ability to perform various levels of IT-related tasks and assignments.
Strong organizational, communication, and decision-making skills are essential; as is the ability to multitask and set priorities.
Ability to support multiple projects of various sizes and complexities.
Ability to meet many levels of customers’ needs in a timely and efficient manner.
Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with all levels of personnel.
Strong customer service with an ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
