In 2015, a group of Black engineers came together to help one another find professional opportunities, learn new technologies, start companies, and most notably, create a sense of belonging. Over time, this group of passionate professionals has grown into /dev/color, an organization with an imperative mission: to empower Black software engineers to help one another grow into industry leaders.
/dev/color is working to build the largest professional network of Black software engineers in the nation, and to create a cross-industry standard for professional development and mentorship amongst under-represented communities in professional spaces.
/dev/color is seeking a new Chief Executive Officer (CEO) to lead this fast-growing organization into its next stage of growth. Powered by its mission, /dev/color is developing partnerships with some of the world’s most exciting thought-leaders and tech companies such as Google, Pinterest, Facebook, and AirBnB. The hallmark A* program is building an esteemed network of Black software engineers, guided by the organization’s core values: Community, Access, Empowerment, and Accountability. With a skilled staff, dedicated Board, and collection of committed partner organizations, /dev/color is working diligently to ensure Black engineers fulfill the promise of their talents, become prominent leaders, and leave a lasting legacy on industry.
About the Opportunity:
/dev/color looks forward to welcoming a new Chief Executive Officer with a passion for the organization’s mission, a creative mindset, and a progressive leadership approach. The CEO is poised to lead /dev/color through a critical period of growth and opportunity as s/he forges new partnerships, expands membership, and translates /dev/color’s vision into widespread impact.
The ideal candidate will be an experienced senior manager with an engineering-oriented background, entrepreneurial spirit, and a sophisticated understanding of partnership management and organizational growth.
Organizational Strategy Development and Oversight: The CEO will be responsible for the co-development and implementation of organizational strategy, planning and facilitating enterprise scale, and calibrating short-term organizational objectives in line with /dev/color’s long-term vision.
Board & Advisory Support: The CEO will work closely with the Board of Directors to create and implement the strategic vision and objectives of the organization. The CEO will also act as the main point of contact for the Advisory Board, which provides tailored programmatic support.
External & Community Relations: The CEO will represent /dev/color in public settings (e.g. speaking engagements, conferences, etc.) The CEO will also direct public communications and relations and maintain exemplary credibility amongst constituents.
Program and Partnership Development: Working closely with staff, the CEO will extend and grow programming and partnerships in support of /dev/color’s mission. The CEO will be responsible for the strategic, financial, and practical aspects of program development.
Fundraising & Financial Oversight: The CEO will develop financial goals with the Board of Directors, implement fundraising strategies, and provide fiscal oversight.
Operations Management: The CEO will provide oversight of day-to-day operations, including human capital management.
Essential Skills & Experience:
Seasoned senior manager and leader with demonstrated success growing and directing a cross-functional team
Skilled strategist with a growth mindset; Considerable experience planning and taking organizations to scale
A demonstrable record of success developing corporate partnerships and leading membership-based programming
A proven fundraiser with a strategic, creative, and energetic approach
Senior leadership experience in tech/startup environment
Experience in an engineering-oriented role with a high-level of comfort and fluency around software engineering content
Experience leading operations on a lean team
A progressive thought-leader and passionate advocate for /dev/color’s mission
Technical Background in software engineering or deep experience working in the sector with software engineers
