The internationally acclaimed Detroit Symphony Orchestra, the fourth-oldest symphony orchestra in the United States, is known for trailblazing performances, visionary maestros, and collaborations with the world’s foremost musical artists. Esteemed conductor Leonard Slatkin, called “America’s Music Director” by the Los Angeles Times, became the 12th Music Director of the DSO during the 2008-09 season. As a member of the Community & Learning team, the Community Engagement Coordinator is a driving force in the DSO’s commitment to community engagement, education, diversity, and accessibility. The Coordinator specifically administers initiatives and performance opportunities intended to bring DSO musicians into the community and fulfill the DSO’s ambition to be a community-supporting orchestra. S/he coordinates scheduling, musicians, repertoire, contracts, logistics, financial tracking, and production elements for a wide range of community engagement services including chamber recitals, schools, hospitals, senior homes, community centers, and the DSO’s own Wu Family Academy. The Community Engagement Coordinator interacts frequently with community partners, works closely with DSO Musicians, and is a strong link to virtually all other DSO departments.
Coordinates individual musician participation in community engagement and works with the Community Engagement Manager to meet all community engagement requirements of the Orchestra’s Collective Bargaining Agreement.
Implements community performances by DSO Musicians in groups of all sizes and in a wide variety of settings, with the constant goal of simultaneously achieving community impact and artistic excellence while maintaining necessary work conditions. This includes standard operational aspects such as site visits, venue contracts, logistics, and other production needs.
Works closely with Finance and Personnel to track, process and report on invoices, payments, contracts, payroll and other accounting functions related to community engagement services.
Maintains relationships with a wide variety of organizations, performance venues, and key partners in communities representing diversity of ethnicity, economy, age, and other cultural factors, with the goals of community impact and building the DSO’s base of support.
Provides communications across departments to ensure relevant staff have necessary information about community engagement activities.
Occasionally obtains and prepares music for small ensembles and provides information to DSO Librarians for large ensemble repertoire.
Serves as liaison for guest artists and conductors at performances as needed, such as full orchestra Community Concerts and Neighborhood Concerts.
Works closely with and supports the entire Community & Learning team.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Internationally acclaimed conductor Leonard Slatkin is Music Director of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra (DSO) and the Orchestre National de Lyon (ONL). He also maintains a rigorous schedule of guest conducting and is active as a composer, author, and educator.
Highlights of the 2015-16 season include a three-week Brahms festival in Detroit; engagements with the St. Louis Symphony, Pittsburgh Sy...mphony, Los Angeles Philharmonic, and NHK Symphony in Tokyo; debuts with Beijing's China Philharmonic Orchestra and the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra; and a summer tour of Japan and China with the ONL.
Slatkin’s more than 100 recordings have garnered seven Grammy awards and 64 nominations. His recent Naxos recordings include works by Saint-Saëns, Ravel, and Berlioz (with the ONL) and music by Copland, Rachmaninov, Borzova, McTee, and John Williams (with the DSO). In addition, he has recorded the complete Beethoven and Tchaikovsky symphonies with the DSO (available online as digital downloads).
A recipient of the prestigious National Medal of Arts, Slatkin also holds the rank of Chevalier in the French Legion of Honor. He has received Austria’s Declaration of Honor in Silver, the American Symphony Orchestra League’s Gold Baton Award, and the 2013 ASCAP Deems Taylor Special Recognition Award for his book, Conducting Business.
Slatkin has conducted virtually all of the leading orchestras in the world. As Music Director, he has held posts with the New Orleans, St. Louis, and National symphony orchestras, and he was Chief Conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra. He has served as Principal Guest Conductor of London’s Philharmonia and Royal Philharmonic, the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl, and the Minnesota Orchestra.
