Position Summary and Responsibilities
The Vassar College Library is seeking a Library Specialist to join the Technical Services Department. This position will report to the Head of Technical Services, and work with a team of seven Library Specialists. The incoming Library Specialist will be responsible for monographic copy and original cataloging in all formats for the Main Library. This position will require extensive use of cataloging standards and classification schemes, including Resource Description and Access, MARC bibliographic standards, Library of Congress Subject Headings, and Library of Congress Classification. In concert with the Head of Technical Services, this position will assist in creating and expanding on local Vassar cataloging practices. Though this position will be primarily responsible for monographic cataloging, other priorities and tasks may be assigned depending on needs within the Department, and the Library as a whole.
Qualifications Associate degree (or higher) preferred. Previous experience with OCLC required. Previous experience (at least one year) with monographic copy cataloging required. Previous experience with monographic original cataloging is strongly preferred. Previous experience working with an integrated library system (such as Innovative Interface's Sierra) is strongly preferred. Previous experience with additional technical services functions, such as acquisitions, electronic resources, and/or serials is preferred. Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel, and FileMaker Pro (or equivalent) is preferred. The ideal candidate will be able to: perform exacting work with attention to detail despite interruptions; multitask and prioritize appropriately; work independently and as a member of a team; and be able to understand the inter-relatedness of tasks. The ideal candidate will be highly motivated with a strong sense of responsibility and curiosity. Candidate must be willing to be flexible and learn new skills. Candidate should have the ability to thrive in an atmosphere of change. Candidate must be able to provide excellent service in a pleasant manner to library patrons and staff. The candidate should have an understanding of the importance of the Library's role in achieving the educational mission of a College or University. This will be demonstrated by coursework at the college-level and/or equivalent experience within an academic setting.
