The Department of Family Medicine has an outstanding opportunity for a Senior Computer Specialist and IT Manager for the Department. This position will oversee and provide complex support for the entire spectrum of information technology within the Department, including desktop imaging and deployment management, mid-level server backup support, video telepresence design and implementation, as well as standard software and hardware troubleshooting for a variety of fixed, portable and handheld devices. In addition, the Senior Computer Specialist will document procedures and provide training to end-users throughout the organization. The position will report directly to the Director of Finance and Administration, and work collaboratively and closely with a variety of stakeholders throughout the department including faculty, managers, staff, clinicians, educators and medical residents. The incumbent will be required to proactively identify emerging technology issues in the Department and assist the Director in designing solutions. The IT Manager oversees an annual IT budget in excess of $50K.
Plan, develop and coordinate the Information Technology needs for the entire department, including (but not limited to) approximately 150 desktop and laptop devices, 5 core server systems located at the 4545 UW Datacenter and approximately 150 staff and faculty. Maintain a comprehensive and detailed inventory, insurance and purchasing strategy to keep the department up-to-date with the latest available technology. Work with section managers to determine their IT needs and fit those needs with appropriately priced equipment; make recommendations for future direction and provide guidance to staff and faculty members on all IT-related decisions. Actively develop, monitor and maintain an IT budget and make strategic decisions based upon available funds.
Serve as a senior-level system administrator to the core server systems within Family Medicine. Maintain, debug, upgrade and secure all of these systems using a superior level of knowledge. Position requires expert proficiency in both Windows Server 2012 and VMWare vCenter; the ability to detect and handle intrusion attempts from foreign hosts and the creation of a detailed disaster recovery strategy. Work within data security model requirements such as HIPAA or Human Subjects in a way that provides accessibility and security according to these complex and shifting guidelines. Provide ongoing support of Video Teleconferencing initiatives, including design and strategic roadmap.
Oversee an annual department IT budget in excess of $50K. As the purchasing agent for all IT-related needs, maintain a database of software licenses and hardware devices within the department. According to University and departmental policy inventory, insure and eventually surplus all equipment through the proper campus resources. As a ProCard holder, reconcile purchases made on a monthly basis and work with section managers to place transactions on appropriate budgets. Work with fiscal entities in administration to project yearly licensing fees and models, and periodically evaluate these commitments to ensure usage of such agreements provides a high benefit to cost ratio.
Provide expert level assistance in computer desktop, handheld, printer, video conferencing and software support. Work with vendors such as Publication Services, Network Operations, IT Services and alike to facilitate IT-related contract services to users within the department.
Continue advancing knowledge of emergent technology issues by attending meetings, subscribing to mailing lists and investing time in training classes. Conversely, offer IT-related training to individuals or groups in ad hoc or organized settings.
Maintain an appropriately sized IT staff and provide direct management to all employees within this unit. Act as the primary contact for all employee-related issues and escalate their requests to other individuals within the department when necessary. Responsibilities include hiring, evaluating and directing these employee's workflow. Currently supervises one Senior Computer Specialist.
Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related field.
Six to eight years experience in desktop support, server administration and end-user training.
Position requires expert-level proficiency in desktop support, server administration and end-user training. Experience with MacOS (all point releases) and Windows (all versions).
Superior level knowledge in Windows Server 2012, vSphere 6.0, and FileMaker Pro Server. Proven knowledge and capability handing network intrusion, system security and firewalling practices for desktop and server systems.
Experience leading teams with proven project management credentials.
Skill with standards based conferencing solutions such as Polycom, Tandberg or LifeSize. Proven oral and written communication skills.
Ability to handle confidential information responsibly.
Ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment effectively in decision making-processes.
Demonstrated ability to create clear and concise documentation for reference or training purposes.
General knowledge of the IT Industry and contemporary trends in this field.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
Experience working in an academic environment with faculty, fellows, residents, staff and student trainees. Experience working in a clinical environment with UW Medicine systems.
Experience with LDAP technologies such as Active Directory or Open Directory.
Ability to perform operating system configurations via a terminal or by scripting.
Experience working in a HIPAA and FERPA compliance environment.
