Reporting to the Associate Dean for Communications and Public Relations, the Associate Director for Media Relations will develop and implement an effective strategic media relations program to enhance and influence the quality, quantity and tone of media coverage of Stanford Law School and to ensure that SLS experts, scholarship, thought leadership, innovations in legal education, etc. are effectively promoted to various audiences and across various communications platforms to enhance and protect the institutions reputation.
The Associate Director for Media Relations is a member of the senior communications staff, responsible for strategic planning, proactive and reactive media relations and issues management, entrusted with confidential and sensitive material, exercises independent judgment and acts as spokesperson for SLS in media relations and issues management situations. General guidance is received from the Associate Dean for Communications and Public Relations. Significant independence is inherent in this second-level management position. As a member of the Media Team, this position works very closely with the Assistant Director of Digital and Social Media, coordinating all media outreach, consultations regarding media strategies, digital promotion, content for the SLS news blog, co-management of student interns, and more.
The position is intellectually challenging in that it a) needs to work effectively within an academic environment and interfaces with very diverse constituencies, i.e., faculty, general public, and the media; b) combines high independence with a need for consultation and consensus; c) is highly visible, with any errors clearly exposed in the press for all the world to see; and d) requires the ability to quickly grasp and translate into compelling content complex research and scholarship as well as what is unique and innovative about the law school.
25% Spokesperson: Act as spokesperson for SLS with the press and the public in both proactive and reactive situations, including crises. Serve as media liaison, handling all incoming inquiries. Generate compelling stories to pitch to the media. Manage issues to limit reputational damage. Ensure that all media inquiries received or initiated are logged. Serve as on-call media spokesperson for SLS nights and weekends.
15% Media relations strategy and planning: Develop and implement effective media relations programs with routine outreach to local and national news organizations. Develop and maintain relationships with key reporters and editors at top-tier and influential media outlets. In a cycle of continuous improvement, evaluate SLS coverage annually and adjust media strategy accordingly.
20% Writing/content generation: Write compelling press releases, news blog posts and articles and produce compelling video pieces about faculty scholarship, institutional priorities, and the work of programs, centers, clinics and students. Work effectively with the Associate Director of Publications and the Social Media Manager to coordinate the push efforts for all institutional content across platforms.
15% Oversee the development of all press materials: Prepare press releases, backgrounders, Q&A, standby/press statements, media website content, experts lists, etc. to ensure that SLS is accessible to reporters and editors. Prepare statements for key issues that could affect SLS and keep them updated. Oversee press conferences and ensure logistics and preparations are handled by staff. Serve as the Communications representative of the Emergency Planning Committee for the law school.
10% Communications consultant to internal clients: Act as primary communications consultant for key internal clients (including faculty, clinics and programs and centers). Participate in regular meetings of key clients with media relations needs to develop strategies and tactics for facilitating effective communications between SLS leadership, faculty, the news media and public opinion leaders and what stories should be pitched to the media. Provide media training for faculty, academic staff, and key administrators in the Law School as needed.
10% Develop new processes and ways of working that improves efficiencies within Communications and PR and across the law school as it relates to media relations and issues management. Eliminate rework, duplication of effort, enhance office efficiency, and heighten office productivity.
5% Strategic communications planning: Assist the Associate Dean with strategic planning, financial and business planning, special projects, and other assignments pertaining to the medium-range and long-range health and mission of the Communications and PR function. Participate in bi-weekly Associate Director meetings and bi-weekly team meetings to help facilitate effective communications within the team and key partners and clients around the law school.
Seven-to-ten years experience in a public relations role at an academic institution, corporation or public relations agency.
Mastery of skills in journalism and public relations. Business experience and knowledge a plus. Issues management experience a must. College degree is required. Graduate degree is a plus.
Ability to write and think clearly under stressful circumstances is a must. A sophisticated and balanced approach to volatile and emotional situations is necessary.
Superb writing and editing skills.
Ability to write and synthesize complex material into compelling content for a variety of news formats and outlets. Ability to translate technical language and ideas into language that is easily comprehensible to non-specialists.
Expert knowledge of new communications channels/social media and other online technologies.
Ability to work effectively within an academic environment. Ability to work effectively with senior organizational leaders as well as other communications staff across campus.
Ability to lead others by example and through influence.
