The Department of Basic Science Education at Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine (VTCSOM- http://medicine.vtc.vt.edu/) is recruiting several new faculty at the assistant, associate or full professor levels. The medical school, located in Roanoke, VA, has a unique partnership with Carilion Clinic, graduated its first class in 2014, and maintains a class size of 42 students. The VTCSOM curriculum has a problem-based learning delivery model that integrates patient centered learning and student research/discovery into four value domains – basic science, clinical science, research and interprofessionalism.
Candidates should have a demonstrable passion for dynamic medical education delivery in the disciplines of neuroscience, pathology or medical physiology. The successful candidate's primary responsibility will be innovative, student-centered delivery of basic science content to first and second year medical students. Faculty will dedicate 25% of their time to scholarly activity. Medical education research is strongly encouraged and supported by the department. Opportunities in biomedical research, working as part of an established laboratory team at the Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute, will depend on the candidate's prior research focus. We are especially interested in colleagues who enjoy a highly collaborative environment, interacting with faculty and researchers from their own as well as other disciplines.
Competitive, twelve-month faculty salaries and fringe benefits will be fully supported through three year renewable appointments. The successful candidates will have a terminal degree in a relevant discipline (Ph.D., M.D., D.O., D.V.M. or equivalent), will have completed postdoctoral training, and will be experienced in teaching medical students. Individuals will be hired into Virginia Tech in anticipation of VTCSOM's full integration as the university's 9th college in 2018.
Minimum Qualifications: MD or PhD/EdD in basic sciences. Experience teaching in a university setting. Demonstrable skills in communication, time management and interpersonal skills. Appropriate licensure as defined by required education.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience teaching in a medical or health professional education setting.
