UW Medicine owns or operates Harborview Medical Center (HMC), Northwest Hospital & Medical Center (NWH), Valley Medical Center (VMC), UW Medical Center (UWMC), a network of UW Medicine Neighborhood Clinics (UWNC) that provide primary care, UW Physicians, UW School of Medicine, Airlift Northwest, and other owned, operated or affiliated entities as appropriate. UW Medicine has an outstanding opportunity for a Service Line Administrator, UW Medicine Digestive Health Institute Services. This individual will be responsible for the successful development, growth and strategic integration of the Digestive Health Institute Services across UW Medicine. Duties include strategic planning and collaboration, program development, marketing and coordinating activities among managers, administrators and physician leadership to assure optimal access and service for patients and referring providers while ensuring positive working relationships across the system.
The SLA's role is to participate in and support the development and implementation of approved programmatic strategies consistent with the UW Medicine Strategic Plan to provide access and service to patients, increase market share, meet community needs, achieve quality, safety and operating plan goals, and create a sustainable business model. The position requires collaboration with operational leaders across all UW Medicine practice sites to ensure high quality and efficient patient care and service.
The SLA is responsible for program development, business plan coordination and oversight working with appropriate UW Medicine departments. Monitors all metrics and prepares reports for leadership team and medical staff on all aspects of the Service Line.
Provides leadership for strategic program planning and implementation of the approved UW Medicine Strategic Plan related to Digestive Health Institute Services and the UW Medicine Patients Are First goals in these areas. The SLA also completes key liaison activities with UW Medicine entities and affiliated parties. Completes new program development/expansion plans and coordinates marketing and physician outreach in messaging campaigns related to Digestive Health Services working with Strategic Marketing & Communications and Strategic Outreach Departments.
The SLA reports administratively to the Director of Strategic Service Line Planning with accountability to the Executive Directors of all UW Medicine entities and the Medical Director(s) of the Digestive Health Institute for ensuring that all sites meet the standards of UW Medicine and the physicians practicing at all sites; and to each of the UW Medicine entities for achieving strategic goals.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Provides administrative oversight of Digestive Health Institute program and clinical services across UW Medicine.
Coordinates activities among managers, administrators, and physician leadership in these services to assure positive working relationships between entitles and programs and optimal service delivery and efficiency, with emphasis on cross-system solutions. Creates and maintains a participatory environment to enable the multidisciplinary team to develop a team approach to service delivery and efficiently contribute to positive patient outcomes.
Maintains accountability for the development of tactical and financial policies, business plans, infrastructure and work processes to meet the strategic mission of the Service Line and all associated clinical services and programs. Participates in the fiscal year budgeting process for all Digestive Health related units/departments budgets.
Provides support and guidance to departmental, operational and physician team leaders at each of the various sites to ensure consistently exceptional quality and service across the system. Participates in recruitment and selection process of candidates for administrative, nursing and physician leadership roles within service line Departments/Divisions/Units. Supports/participates in onboarding of new leaders.
Maintains system-wide perspective of services (inpatient and outpatient) to ensure effective integration of programs and clinical services to meet our strategic goals and the needs of the community in most efficient manner, reducing unnecessary duplication and optimizing capital and personnel investments.
Works to integrate multiple teams across UW Medicine and their project work, including work related to clinical practices, care pathways and quality initiatives. Collaborates and coordinates with other administrators and managers to achieve strategic goals and resolve any challenges or conflicts.
Assures implementation of UW Medicine Digestive Health Institute business and strategic plans and program development, working closely with HMC, NWH, UWMC, UWNC, VMC, SOM, and others as appropriate.
Works with executive team leaders and physician leadership to develop appropriate and effective business plans and initiatives for existing and approved new program development. Identifies opportunities consistent with UW Medicine strategic plan principles for expansion and/or consolidation of services. Monitors all plans and initiatives.
Works with all entities to develop and optimize the ambulatory network of providers; specifically identifying opportunities with providers who have an interest in a stronger affiliation with UW Medicine.
Translates strategic plan/goals to local level, working with entity operational and executive leaders on successful implementation of plan/tactics. Identify barriers to implementation of tactics/growth. Initiates and oversees process improvement processes addressing barriers.
Participates in and initiates development of organizational decision support tools working closely with Decision Support, Financial Services, IT and Administration to develop standard metrics, reporting and dashboards. Works continuously to monitor and track trends related to service area performance, specifically in the areas of resource utilization, financial monitoring, quality of service and clinical outcomes, market needs and demographics, and maintains active knowledge of advances in clinical practice and technology and changes in reimbursement to inform ongoing strategic and marketing plans for the services.
Develops, implements, and communicates plan to physician and staff; develops effective reports and metrics for various sites of clinical care. Creates opportunities for service line operational leaders from each entity to work together to standardize practices when possible.
Responsible for providing project leadership for initiatives developed by the Digestive Health Institute Steering Committee in conjunction with medical leadership for all UW Medicine entities, ensuring the implementation of tactical elements of the business initiatives including being a liaison with each entity across the UW Medicine system.
Works with Strategic Marketing & Communications Department to develop strategic marketing plans to promote the Service Line to both internal and external audience of referring providers, consumers, etc.
Partners with Strategic Outreach Department to build effective outreach plan and recruitment relationships with community providers.
Serves as primary administrative leader and contact for Digestive Health Institute services across UW Medicine.
Builds and maintains positive relationships with key internal and external stakeholders to assure successful outcomes of Service area programs and projects.
In collaboration with UW Medicine campaigns and affiliated programs, works to maintain and develop market presence of the Service Line and their associated clinical services and programs.
Represents Service areas to varied audiences (patients, medical and support staff, administrators, general public) through written and verbal media to increase educational and market awareness of Service area products and programs.
Works closely with other service line administrators, managers, directors and providers to support Digestive Health Institute services across the health system.
Communicates standards of service and quality for the service line, and assists individual departments in meeting those expectations.
Communicates pertinent information regarding clinical activities and metrics to the Physician Chiefs and related Department Chairs, the Chief Health System Officer, Executive Directors, Medical Directors, Executive Team members and Department Directors in related SOM departments.
Actively participates on UW Medicine committees as assigned and represents UW Medicine in community forums and outreach efforts as appropriate.
Reviews and assists with contract development and memorandums of understanding within the scope of assigned programs.
Participates in quality assurance, patient safety, and service excellence monitoring and review and in development of strategies to assure that consistent standards are maintained. Developing dashboards/reports to monitor progress and report out as needed.
Collaborates with the physician leadership in the Departments of Medicine and Surgery as well as other departments on development of activities that impact and support the overall programmatic vision/mission.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Requirements: Minimum of six to eight years of successful leadership in hospital, clinic or health system management with increasing levels of responsibility AND Masters degree in Business or Healthcare related field. An equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute for stated requirements.
Desired: Strong understanding of Ambulatory Network/Providers. Prefer experience with digestive health services. Demonstrated ability in critical thinking, analysis and business plan development. Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively within complex organizational structures. Demonstrated ability in strategic planning, to include specific areas of outreach and marketing. Demonstrated ability to develop teams and manage to successful outcomes.
