DESCRIPTION: Humboldt State University’s DEPARTMENT OF OCEANOGRAPHY invites applications for an academic year tenure-track faculty position in PHYSICAL OCEANOGRAPHY.
RANK, SALARY AND BENEFITS:We seek to fill this position at the Assistant Professor rank; however, rank and salary are dependent on the appointee's qualifications and experience. Professional Qualifications: An earned Ph.D. or equivalent in Oceanography or related field from an accredited college or university is preferred at the time of appointment. Applicants with considerable progress towards terminal degree completion by appointment date will be considered. Completion of terminal degree is required prior to the start of the second probationary year following initial appointment.
The successful candidate must demonstrate the following:
Ability to teach undergraduate courses in Introductory Oceanography, Introductory Physics, Physical Oceanography, and upper-division Physics courses within the candidate’s area of expertise;
Experience with field research in coastal and/or open-ocean environments;
Interest in and ability to teach a broad range of courses to diverse students (majors, general education students, etc.);
Commitment to and/or experience promoting and fostering a learning environment that is supportive of individuals from diverse backgrounds;
Record of, or potential for, involving undergraduate students in research and scholarly activity;
Potential for effective teaching or experience teaching using a variety of methodologies; and
Willingness to participate in the development of online learning experiences.
Preferred qualifications for this position include:
B.S. or M.S. in Physics, or successful completion of extensive coursework in Physics.
Research involving active fieldwork in coastal and open-ocean environments.
Background in experimental physics.
Experience using student-centered teaching techniques.

Professional Duties: Candidates should be committed to teaching excellence and to building a strong research record. Instructional assignments may include: Physical Oceanography, General Oceanography, Marine Sampling Techniques, Oceans and Climate, General Physics, and upper division Physics classes. The specific courses to be taught will depend on the candidate's strengths and the specific needs of the College. Teaching assignments will be in the Department of Oceanography (home department), as well as in the Department of Physics & Astronomy, as required.
The primary professional responsibilities of instructional faculty members are: teaching; research, scholarship and creative activity; and service to the University, profession and to the community. These responsibilities include: advising students, participation in campus and system-wide committees, maintaining office hours, working collaboratively and productively with colleagues, and participation in traditional academic functions. Probationary faculty are typically provided ongoing mentorship to be a successful member of the faculty. During the first two years of the probationary period, teaching responsibilities will be reduced by approximately one course each semester. The reduced teaching load supports the establishment of research, scholarship and/or creative activities required for retention, tenure and promotion.
General Information: Humboldt State University is part of the 23-campus California State University system. Founded in 1913, HSU is one of the premier, public institutions in the western United States; it is a residential and rural campus with an enrollment of approximately 7,800 students. The main campus is located in Arcata, California, in the northwestern part of the state along the coast, situated among redwood trees in an area that offers unmatched scenic beauty, moderate climate and opportunities for outdoor activities. The surrounding Humboldt County locale has a population of 136,000. The community offers an excellent range of businesses, services, and cultural activities and performances. The local schools are ranked in the top performance percentiles, both in the state and nationally.
The Department of Oceanography offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Oceanography. There are currently 65 students working towards the B.S. degree. An active faculty emphasizes teaching excellence while pursuing research in a variety of environments. Marine environments in close proximity to the campus include Humboldt Bay, the second largest bay in California, several coastal lagoons, and the coastal ocean. The University maintains a 90-foot research vessel, a variety of smaller boats ranging from 12 to 29 feet in length, and a Marine Laboratory 15 miles north of the main campus in the town of Trinidad. Opportunities may exist to collaborate in a number of ongoing and planned state and federal ocean monitoring programs. The Department of Physics & Astronomy offers a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics (with an optional concentration in Astronomy) and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Physics. There are currently 80 students working towards a degree in Physics. The faculty in both the Department of Oceanography and the Department of Physics have strong commitments to including undergraduates in research and projects.
