Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Lab Facilities Specialist for its Department of Marine & Coastal Sciences at the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences. The incumbent in this position will practice and comply with Rutgers Environmental Health & Safety (REHS) and departmental standards, managing all departmental facilities projects, renovations, relocations, and requests, including for its outlying field station. The Lab Facilities Specialist supports extensive research infrastructure to ensure that faculty and staff can perform their work properly without interruption.
Among the key duties of the position are the following:
Manages service and maintenance contracts with service providers and vendors, ensuring that all departmental research-specific systems/equipment operate reliably.
Provides specific and general information, notices and alerts to departmental personnel.
Ensures departmental compliance and interaction with REHS, Rutgers University Fire Department, New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, and United States Department of Homeland Security.
Monitors and ensures the safety and functionality of all research laboratories, and participates in lab safety inspections with REHS, addressing recommendations.
Consults with faculty on research equipment procurements to ensure consideration of all potential utility, space, and environmental issues in order to identify additional expenditures.
Advises on space usage, space assignments, and providing building access.
Serves serve as a liaison with University Facilities regarding all departmental building, utility and grounds concerns.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Requires a Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience plus two years of experience in higher education safety policies and procedures.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of Rutgers Environmental Health & Safety (REHS) standards, fire code and other facilities regulations
Knowledge of biological and/or environmental science lab operations and needs
Ability to communicate effectively in order to enforce lab safety and satisfy procurement requests
Experience managing a large inventory of resources
This position requires the ability to remotely respond to facilities-related emergencies and urgent matters, which may occur outside of standard work hours.
