The successful candidate will work closely with faculty in assigned departments to advance scholarship and learning for the VCU community. They will teach course integrated sessions and workshops on important research concepts, provide in depth research consultation and services, contribute to collection decisions for specialized resources. Furthermore, they will build relationships with their departments to ensure library collections and research services are relevant for evolving scholarship and learning needs.
Reporting to the Head of Academic Outreach the Science & Engineering Librarian will actively build and maintain relationships with faculty, students and administrative units within the School of Engineering and science and mathematics departments within the College of Humanities and Sciences. The successful candidate will join a team including a second Science and Engineering Research Librarian and an Engineering and Science Collections Librarian to serve STEM faculty and students on the Monroe Park Campus. The Science and Engineering Librarian will provide course-integrated instruction, workshops, individual consultations, and research assistance. The person will actively pursue outreach opportunities to promote library services and advance research and learning for STEM faculty and students. They will ensure services are relevant to evolving STEM research demands by actively monitoring scholarship in the field and the curriculum and research interests of the faculty. Academic Outreach Librarians are expected to contribute beyond their subject area by providing collaborative and cross-disciplinary support for departmental and library-wide outreach activities.
Academic Outreach Librarians are expected to be active professionally and to contribute to developments in the field. Faculty with the VCU Libraries are evaluated, and promoted, on the basis of job performance, scholarship, and professional development and service.
ALA-accredited graduate degree or accredited graduate degree in another appropriate discipline. Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU.
A degree in a STEM-related discipline. Experience in teaching in a classroom setting or providing in depth research assistance. Familiarity with specialized sources and research methods for science and engineering. Ability to work collaboratively with faculty. Evidence of creativity, initiative, and flexibility when working independently and on teams. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
