Under the supervision of the PI, individual will participate in experiments and research focused on Platelets. This position will assist with planning and performing specialized experimental techniques in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Tissue/Cell Biology and Immunology. Handling and processing of laboratory specimens, using techniques including Western blot, Southern blot, Northern blot, RNAse protection and PCR. This position is also responsible for data entry and analysis, and general lab duties as assigned. Operates and maintains laboratory and field instruments and specialized equipment including flow cytometry. Aids in the preparation of human and mouse platelets for tests and experiments, performs and improves tests as required. Complete and maintain data properly, including lab notebooks, digital data on hard drives, cell lines, and bacterial strains and animal records. Perform data calculations and analysis from experimental results and use appropriate computer software. Order laboratory supplies and handle radioactive and biohazardous materials. Inventory and dispose of radioactive and biohazardous wastes.
Demonstrated experience and ability to perform standard repetitive techniques that may be required in research protocols related to specific lab. Demonstrated ability to read, interpret and apply protocols in conducting research. Demonstrated ability in following step wise experimental protocols. Skill to troubleshoot adaptations of experimental protocols.
Demonstrated skill in the operation and maintenance of various lab equipment such as confocal and quantitative fluorescent microscopes, centrifuges, spectrophotometers, and scintillation counter.
Demonstrated skill in accurate record keeping and ability to organize, analyze, and calculate data. Knowledge in basic math for maintaining ledgers, income and expenditures reports.
Experience with the operation of a personal computer and software application, such as Access, MS Word and Excel. Knowledge to work with and learn new software for analysis.
Knowledge sufficient to coordinate studies with other departments and the lab. Skill to plan and organize work assignments in an efficient and productive manner.
Manual dexterity and legible handwriting. Ability assist with general lab maintenance, including cleaning and restocking supplies and manage a regular schedule in the lab.
Demonstrated ability to assist in the writing of papers for publication, research proposals.
Demonstrated ability to follow established Safety and Biohazardous Material Guidelines.
Willingness and ability to work with mice and/or other lab animals and/or infected samples, if required.
Demonstrated skill to work with animals, as well as animal and human tissues; tissue trimming and histology analysis, and knowledge in necropsy. Demonstrated knowledge to care for and handle small lab animals (mice) and to administer medications and anesthesia to perform phlebotomy and minor surgical procedures on animals, euthanize small laboratory animals. Familiarity with the writing of Animal Subjects protocols and with the surgical microscope and surgical procedures
Theoretical knowledge of a life science such as is typically acquired by a Bachelor's Degree in a field related to the research being conducted. Related fields may include any of the following fields of study: molecular biology, immunology, and biochemistry.
