Assistant Professor of Urban Early Childhood Education

Metropolitan State University, a vibrant and growing public, urban university, is seeking to fill one full-time tenure track Early Childhood Education (ECE) position at the rank of assistant professor in the School of Urban Education, beginning August 2018.
Demonstrated ability to effectively teach core and methods courses for ECE urban teacher candidates seeking licensure in ECE (Birth-Grade 3), as well as introductory courses at the undergraduate level and when appropriate graduate level certification courses,
Contribute to student growth and development through advising, special assistance to advance students' progress and engage in service to the university and community,
Supervise ECE student teacher candidates,
Collaborate on program development and implementation with colleagues on the Early Childhood Education/Elementary Education team,
Provide leadership in nurturing and developing partnerships with urban Birth-Grade 3 educators, local urban schools and other partnerships, including community colleges,
Work collaboratively with a wide range of individuals across the university on IFO committee/s,
Provide appropriate input into ECE community faculty professional development activities,
Engage in professional advancement and scholarship, such as conferences, publications, presentations, and other academic opportunities specifically related to the field of ECE,
Outstanding candidates will bring a demonstrated history of academic excellence, combined with an underlying commitment to serving a culturally diverse student body through delivering educational content based on equity lenses.
PhD/EdD in the field of Early Childhood Education (ECE) or related field, such as Early Childhood Special Education (ABD candidates are eligible to apply but must provide evidence that they will have completed the doctoral degree by August 20, 2018),
Three (3) years of professional teaching experience as a licensed early childhood teacher or specialist in culturally, linguistically, and socioeconomically diverse urban classrooms as teacher of record experienced with Birth-Grade 3 students,
ECE program development experience combined with broad field experiences that include a variety of classroom settings,
Hold a current or be eligible to hold a Minnesota Early Childhood license,
Demonstrated ability to work in a postsecondary institution with a culturally, economically, and linguistically diverse workforce, and
Demonstrated outstanding communication (written & oral) and team skills to work effectively in groups and communicate effectively with a variety of persons and groups.
Three (3) years of experience teaching introductory and advanced courses to ECE urban teacher candidates and professional development coursework credit, as evidenced by experience and other advanced preparation,
Experience teaching and advising adult learners and non-traditional students from diverse backgrounds,
Experience in developing early childhood curricula,
Three (3) years of experience utilizing an urban framework with a focus on early childhood development rooted in culturally relevant/sustaining pedagogy,
A demonstrated understanding of key standards that promote the learning of birth to grade 3 students, and
Experience with preparing state regulatory reports and/or experience in ECE administrative state regulatory requirements.
The School: The mission of the School of Urban Education is twofold: (1) To increase the number of well-prepared teachers of color and American Indian teachers in Minneapolis, St. Paul, and inner-ring suburbs in order for the urban teaching workforce to reflect the racially/ethnically diverse populations of students and communities; and (2) To empower urban teachers with the content knowledge, pedagogical skills, urban field experiences, and professional dispositions needed to improve educational achievements of historically and currently underserved urban learners by advocating for the right to receive a high quality education. The Urban Early Childhood Education and Urban Elementary Education licensure programs are the two largest and fastest growing in the School of Urban Education in which more than 300 teacher candidates are enrolled, of which currently more than 50% are candidates of color or American Indian. Salary: Salary is commensurate with education and experience, and is determined by the salary placement process as outlined in the Inter Faculty Organization (IFO) Master Agreement
