The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE, http://maeweb.ucsd.edu/) at the University of California, San Diego) invites applications for three (3) Assistant Professor (tenure-track) positions in:
Advanced Propulsion/Combustion Concepts (Experimental). We seek candidates working on advanced aspects of aerospace propulsion systems, including combustion dynamics at high-pressure, multiphase and trans/super-critical conditions relevant to future propulsion systems, air-breathing engines, chemical rockets, ion propulsion, power generation and conversion for aerospace vehicles, and the application of aerospace science and technology to terrestrial energy devices. Strong experimental skills are preferred, although candidates with computational and analytical profiles will also be considered.
Advanced UAVs and Autonomy, including a strong experimental component. Possible areas of interest include high-endurance UAVs and stealth, tethered operation, bio-inspired approaches, and flight in or near complex structures and in GPS-denied environments, including the optimization of novel fixed-wing and multirotor designs, as well as the manipulation of environmental features, payload delivery, and vehicles that can autonomously take off, land, extract energy from the environment, and cooperate to efficiently achieve mission objectives in the presence of adversaries. UCSD has vibrant programs in robotics, data science, remote environmental sensing, and biomechanics; candidates with research focus areas that are synergetic with such existing programs are especially encouraged to apply.
Space Systems Engineering with a strong focus on research in space-based science and technologies and associated applications. Research topics of interest include, but are not limited to, low-cost launch systems technologies; emerging spacecraft power, propulsion, thermal and/or control systems; novel sensor systems; small, micro and nanosatellites; spacecraft, vehicle and mission design; and satellite constellation design and control.
The required job duties include developing an excellent research program, teaching of university students, and service activities. As such, successful faculty candidates will demonstrate potential for teaching excellence and the highest standards of scholarship and professional activity in their research area. In addition, preferred candidates will have demonstrated accomplishments in areas contributing to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and have a desire to participate in the School's diversity initiatives (http://www.jacobsschool.ucsd.edu/diversity/).
A Ph.D. degree (or advanced to candidacy) is required in Engineering or related disciplines. Rank of positions is at the Assistant Professor level.
Salary: Level of appointments will be commensurate with qualifications; salary based on UC pay scales and market conditions.
