Ball State University is accepting applications for a professional position as Head of Archives User Engagement.
Ball State University Libraries’ Archives and Special Collections is a teaching archive that provides access to a diversity of unique and valuable print and digital materials and maintains a strong dedication to student instruction, faculty research, community engagement, and public service. The repository’s collection areas include the University Archives, the Stoeckel Archives of Local History, and Rare Books and Manuscripts with noteworthy special collections such as an extensive collection of John Steinbeck books and manuscripts, the papers of Congressman Phil Sharp, and the archives of Ball State University alumnus David Letterman received in 2016-2017. The Ball State University Digital Media Repository optimizes discovery of open access to over 150 distinct digital collections from the Archives.
Leveraging the richness of these collections, the Archives serves as an invaluable partner for faculty, student, and community research projects and creative endeavors including the Ball State University African American Alumni Oral History Project and the Changing Gears documentary film project. Working with the Assistant Dean for Digital Scholarship and Special Collections and supported by an experienced and talented staff, the Head of Archives User Engagement will seek opportunities to expand impactful user engagement with Archives collections and services among students, faculty, researchers, and the Muncie and Delaware County community.
The salary for this position is $58,000.
Major responsibilities: Provide expertise, leadership, management, and supervision to support innovative initiatives and high-quality services in the areas of reference, outreach, instruction, community engagement, collection development, and collection management for Ball State University Archives and Special Collections. Develop strategies for assessing and evaluating the user experiences of archives patrons and recommend and implement programs and technologies to expand impactful user engagement with archives collections and resources.
Minimum qualifications: MLS/MLIS/MIS degree from an ALA accredited program with course work or equivalent experience in archives and/or manuscripts at time of appointment.
Two or more years of experience in archives and special collections; experience with project management/leadership or supervision in an archives or special collections department; experience with instruction, outreach, or community/donor relations in an archives or special collections department.
Effective oral and written communication skills; strong organizational skills; ability to work effectively with a diverse group of researchers and community members.
Preferred qualifications: Experience evaluating and implementing user engagement technologies in an archives and special collections setting including digital exhibit platforms, finding aid delivery systems, patron registration systems, collection management systems, etc.
