Detailed Position Description: Reporting to the Access and Outreach Services Librarian on a daily basis in the Collections, Access, and Discovery Department, the Evening Access Services Librarian is responsible for all aspects of the operation of the Copley Library building during the week from evening to early morning hours. This individual represents management in Copley Library from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. (exception library faculty on duty). Maintains a professional, positive demeanor at all times, and provides excellent customer service to faculty, staff, students, and other library users. He/she works with other Access Services staff members and trains, supervises, and evaluates work-study students. The Evening Access Services Librarian works at Reference Desk and answers reference question in-person and virtually from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. While working at the reference desk, he/she continues to supervise overall Circulation Desk activities. He/she assists with stack maintenance, inventory, San Diego Circuit/ILL work, or reserves, as needed. This individual serves as liaison between Copley Library and USD Public Safety on all incidents and those dealing with difficult patrons. Other duties related to the building include: maintaining a quiet study atmosphere in Copley Library, monitoring the library environment until closing to ensure safety and smooth operation of library services, and securing the library and setting alarm before leaving building. He/she must have the ability to work independently and as a team member and to solve problems during times when working alone. Enforces and follows library policies. On certain days may be the sole library staff member on duty, having functional responsibility for the entire library and all equipment, including computers. The Evening Access Services Librarian works Sunday through Thursday from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. He/she must have the ability to work evenings and weekends.

Job Requirements: Required: MLS or MLIS Degree from a library school accredited by the American Library Association; minimum one year experience in circulation and/or reference; must be able to work Sunday through Thursday from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. during the academic year and until 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. during the summer; knowledge of an integrated, online library automation system; excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communications skills. Preferred: Supervisory experience in an academic/research library; proficient in using the Innovative Interfaces Library Automation System; demonstrated knowledge of print and electronic reference tools; ability to work independently and solve problems, as well as a team member.
