The College of Veterinary Medicine seeks a Histotechnologist I for its Biomedical & Diagnostic Sciences Department's Histology Lab. The primary purpose of this position is to provide technical support by performing routine histopathology procedures on clinical and research tissue samples. Performs procedures involved in preparing tissue samples for microscopic evaluation to include gross trimming of specimens, tissue embedding, tissue cutting and placement on slides, special slide staining, and immunohistochemistry.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Performs histology tasks to include tissue embedding, tissue cutting and placement on slides, special slide staining by hand, and immunohistochemistry
Uses and maintains automated machines such as processors, Hematoxylin & Eosin (H&E) stainers, and cover slippers
Performs quality control measures to ensure proper staining of routine H&E, including special stains
Creates chemical solutions and maintains a clean and organized laboratory environment
Provides guidance and training to staff and students
Receives specimens from biopsy for processing
Accessions and performs gross trimming procedures on formalin-fixed specimens
Oversees performance of immunohistochemical testing as ordered by pathologists, including selection of correct control tissue, dilution of antibodies, performing correct staining process by automation or hand, and quality assurance to ensure proper stain achievement
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Knowledge of biology, chemistry, or other laboratory science. Knowledge of reagent preparation. Knowledge of quality control. Ability to make coordinated hand and finger movements to grasp and manipulate objects. Ability to pay attention to fine details. Ability to follow written and oral directions with precision. Ability to accurately keep records.
