<p>Since the mid 1970’s, the Advocate office has been the sole University entity charged with representing students in University disciplinary processes. Advocates provide students with representation in meetings and hearings and insight into possible outcomes (based on historical precedents). <br /><br />The Lead Student Advocate is a new position. The successful candidate must be interested in balancing students’ due process rights and student development outcomes. The Lead Advocate will both represent students in disciplinary processes and hire, train, and direct student advocates (University law students). The successful candidate will provide the students’ perspective at University hearings, committee meetings and orientation sessions. The Lead Advocate must familiarize themselves with University conduct proceedings, policies, and title Title IX regulations (current and emerging), and apply this information to current proceedings.<br /><br />Client Advocacy (30%):<br />• Balance students’ due process rights and student development outcomes<br />• Meet with students, conduct intake and provide guidance about the disciplinary process<br />• Develop case strategies through consultations with student advocates<br />• Consult with parties and negotiate resolutions<br />• Utilize expertise with formal fact-finding processes, including interviewing witnesses, analyzing data and preparing cases for hearings<br />• Apply research skills and understanding of University policies<br />• Formulate and present opening statements, cross examinations, and closing statements at hearings<br />• File written appeals as needed<br />• Maintain a positive relationship with University staff, faculty, and students<br />• Understand the University’s reporting structure and work in tandem with the Student Conflict Resolution staff<br /><br />Supervisory Responsibilities (30%):<br />• Recruit, develop and retain for a team of 2-4 part-time student advocates student advocates (University law students)<br />• Provide guidance, support, and training for student advocatesfor a team of 2-4 part-time student advocates<br />• Familiarize student advocates with conduct processes, procedures and precedents<br />• Introduce team members to the University offices responsible for conduct process<br />• Identify professional development opportunities (workshops, conferences or peer visits)<br />• Identify emerging trends and opportunities for improvement by reviewing client surveys<br />• Support ongoing professional development of student advocates by providing performance feedback<br /><br />Administrative Duties (25%):<br />• Provide leadership to an independent and self-directed team<br />• Manage the daily operational expenses<br />• Prepare the budget for an annual fee request process<br />• Manage the team’s client and hearing schedules<br />• Schedule and manage regular staff meetings<br />• Establish and maintain confidential case files<br />• Maintain case numbers for budgetary and administrative purposes<br /><br />Outreach and Training (15%):<br />• Represent student issues on various committees related to student conduct and the process<br />• Collaborate with the Office of Community Standards, the Office for of Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action, the Student Conflict Resolution Center and the Office of for Student Affairs on individual and institutional conduct issues<br />• Conduct community training sessions detailing the role of the advocates in the context of the University’s disciplinary processes<br /><br />This is a part-time, 70%, 12 month appointment.</p>
<p>Minimum Qualifications:<br />• B.A or B.S plus at least four years of related experience<br />• Experience with Title IX issues in higher education<br />• Strong communication and oral presentation skills<br />• Ability to adapt advocacy skills to an administrative process<br />• Experience working with student conduct process in higher education setting<br /><br />Preferred Qualifications:<br />• Advanced Degree<br />• Understanding of the University of Minnesota’s Student Conduct Code and conduct processes<br />• Client intake and management experience<br />• Experience researching and presenting positions on developing laws, precedent and impending legislation<br /><br />Due to issues related to conflict of interest, licensed attorneys cannot be considered for this position.</p>
