Reporting to the Director as part of the leadership team of the department, the Associate Director for Student Leadership and Engagement leads the department in developing, coordinating and administering leadership, educational and entertainment programs for the University. The Associate Director works with the student affairs professionals, paraprofessional staff and students in the department and across the campuses to stimulate new and creative programs, effectively manage traditional programs and services, teach and emulate the concepts of personal and organizational leadership development, expand the knowledge and skill of student organization officers and members, and generally advance the goals and objectives of the department, division and university. This includes but is not limited to the supervision of Student Involvement for Monroe Park and MCV Campus Programs, Student Leadership Development, Student Organization Services, Civic Engagement, Fraternity and Sorority Life and Off-Campus Student Services.
The successful candidate will be highly energetic with a passion for student development, creative approaches to programmatic challenges, manage complex budgets and understand personnel supervision and team development. The Associate Director is expected to be active professionally and to represent VCU through participation in local, regional, and national associations and professional activities.
Performance Management and Supervision *Provides leadership by, directing the departments’ work with faculty and staff, colleagues, students and community partners in order to support, provide and/or facilitate activities that ensure the department meets student leadership development and engagement goals. *Provide leadership in the areas of Student Leadership and Civic Engagement, Fraternity and Sorority Life, Student Engagement and Off-campus Student Services. *Hire, orientate, and supervise team by performing such things as: direct, schedule, provide performance feedback, evaluate, suggest professional development and performance intervention when necessary and manage the performance review process. *Supervise a team of professional faculty, classified staff, graduate assistants and student assistants in leadership, educational, and entertainment programs. This includes routine supervisory meetings, annual written evaluations, and. *Provides leadership, analysis and advice in relation to policies and procedures regarding students and services for students, including risk management. *Leads or participates in divisional or College-wide initiatives and committees as assigned.
Programs and Events *Strengthen and lead efforts to develop programs and systems that encourage, record, and assess student engagements in order for students to persist. *Plans, organizes, directs, and administers activities and services that support students in assigned areas, and ensures that such activities and services remain with budgetary limits. *Provides general leadership, planning, coordination and direction to student organization and event production on both the Monroe Park and MCV Campuses. *Ensures the effective and efficient management of all policies, procedures, and practices related to programs and events produced by programming organizations and departments.
Major Events *Provides leadership for the development and production of major university events including but not limited to: Welcome Week, MCV Orientation programs, Homecoming. Supervise staff or student committees responsible for event management and implementation. *Supervise development and implementation of Leadership and Civic Engagement Programs. Work with university officials and departments in the coordination, promotion, and implementation of major university events.
Leadership Development *Supervises the development and implementation of leadership and organizational training programs for students and student organizations. Work with staff to develop and produce annual leadership retreats, seminars, workshops, and mentoring opportunities for students and leaders. Coordinates the leadership recognition programs including Leadership & Service Awards and Board of Visitors Awards.
Fraternity and Sorority Life *Provides general leadership, planning, coordination and direction to Fraternity and Sorority Life. Coordinate policy, procedure, and judicial activities related to Fraternity and Sorority Life and student organizations. Addresses complaints and conducts investigations as required.
Committee Assignments and Meetings *Attend meetings/workshops/retreats/programs, as needed, of student organizations, and/or departmental/divisional meetings as required. *Serve as a member of the Commons & Activities Management Team. *Represent the department/Division of Student Affairs on university committee as requested/assigned. *Perform special university assignments for the department or division such as teaching a UNIV 101 orientation class; making class presentations, conducting/participating in orientation, training, and/or other presentations; and participating in other university projects as needed.
Administration *Prepare reports, correspondence, and other responses related to student programming and events *Respond to requests for information about student involvement *Handle inquiries and complaints from students, faculty, staff and community members regarding traditional events and other campus-wide programs sponsored by the office or department
*Masters degree in student affairs, educational administration or related field *Five to seven years of full-time experience in a college union/student activities/recreation/multicultural student activities management or similar position is required *Supervision of full-time professional, clerical and support staff is highly recommended *Excellent interpersonal, written, presentation and oral communication skills, delivered in a manner appropriate to the audience *Ability to establish priorities, organize, schedule and solve problems and tasks *Proven ability to synthesize detailed, complex information into clear and compelling recommendations *Demonstrated ability to model appropriate professional, ethical and collaborative behaviors that engender collaboration, trust and respect consistent with the responsibilities of this position *Experience in program planning, leadership development, and student organization management is highly recommended *Experience at a non-traditional, urban campus is desired as is experience in supervision of student employees and working with student volunteers *Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU
