The Research Animal Resource Center (RARC) is seeking an Assistant Manager, Animal Facilities to assist in the oversight of the administrative and operational activities of the MSKCC/WCMC RARC Husbandry and Facility Section as assigned by the Manager, Husbandry and Operations. Responsibilities are performed with minimal direction to ensure efficient and effective operations, adherence to regulations and policies, and quality care for animals.
The Assistant Manager, Animal Facilities is responsible for:
Supervises the daily functions and activities of all levels of animal care staff in cooperation with the Facility Manager and Senior Leadership.
Participates in hiring, orienting, evaluating, and disciplinary action of animal care staff. Responds to employees' questions and provides guidance on how to proceed.
Provides oversight of the animal facility when a Facility Manager is on vacation or out sick.
Approves vacation requests and assesses overtime needs with justifications.
Assists with oversight of the daily operations of the assigned animal facilities or the logistics and equipment section.
Ensures maintenance of quality control programs related to animal care to ensure proper practices are consistently followed.
Assists in the assessment of staffing levels and preparation of justifications for change. Develops staff schedules to ensure appropriate coverage at all times.
Oversees staff responsible for the maintenance and care of specialized equipment, including, but not limited to, individually ventilated cage racks, animal transfer stations, biosafety cabinets, autoclaves and departmental vehicles used for transport of animals and equipment.
Participates in the development and implementation of written protocols (SOPs) for animal care, sanitation, equipment maintenance, animal receiving and environmental monitoring. Ensures adequate space for animal housing.
Directs animal care staff in procedures necessary to ensure disease control and treatment programs as determined by the veterinary staff.
Coordinates the reporting of animal health problems from the animal care staff to appropriate paraprofessional and professional staff.
Communicates and ensures compliance with institutional and regulatory agencies' regulations and policies.
Addresses, in a timely manner, issues raised during semiannual facility inspections conducted by the IACUC and those cited by regulatory authorities.
A minimum of 2 years supervisory experience with additional prior experience in the capacity of a lead in an animal care and use program required
An Associate's or higher degree in a related discipline is preferred
Certification by AALAS as a Laboratory Animal Technician (LAT) required, although Laboratory Animal Technologist (LATG) certification is preferred. If not LATG, must obtain LATG certification within 2 years of hire date.
Must be knowledgeable in the operation of a large animal resource facility and program, including facility operations, equipment function, specialized husbandry procedures, and staffing levels
Computer skills required include ability to perform word processing, database entry, and construct and develop spreadsheets.
Written communication skills required include the ability to prepare memos and reports.
Oral communication skills required to explain information to a varied audience.
Math skills required to account for payments, verify reports and to analyze bills and invoices.
Administrative skills required include organizing and maintaining files/records and approving and processing requisitions.
