Controls, systems and instrumentation (CSI) is a unit within infrastructure technology services (ITS). The system administrator will focus on day to day operations of the university logging platform, splunk. Working with a team of engineers, respond to requests for onboarding of new logging sources, requests for privilege to access log data, ensuring log service health and stability, as well as patching and updates to logging system. Additional support duties across the other services that the CSI team supports as assigned, serves on an on call rotation.
Principal duties and responsibilities:
Support and develop the HUIT centralized logging platform, a large installation of the commercial software package Splunk. In this primary responsibility, ensure that splunk is designed and operating within recommended best practices. Author documentation intended for multiple audiences regarding how to direct log data to splunk, how to write reports and alerts, how to troubleshoot data intake, system performance, and report data. Collaborate with stakeholder groups across the University on the usage of central logging, especially with the University's CISO office. Work with CSI team members and subject matter experts on continuous improvements to the reliability and usability of the Splunk platform. Respond to operational requests, including data onboarding process and access control process.
Additional responsibilities of this position are in support of network systems applications and servers, including but not limited to: infoblox dns/dhcp, rhel linux hosts, nagios monitoring. Address escalations from network operations team, identifying common areas of escalation. Manage ITS Control Systems Service Now queue, ensuring that assigned incidents are responded to. Work with network systems staff to document common troubleshooting and remediation steps. Work closely with network operations and engineering staff, understanding those groups workflows and needs, identify opportunities for process improvement and delegation.
Off hours coverage rotation required.

Candidates MUST meet the following basic qualifications in order to be considered for this role:
BS in computer science (or related degree) plus1-3 years experience, or 5-8 years experience in Linux systems administration.
The following qualifications are preferred:
Experience with log aggregation systems, ideally Splunk.
Good understanding of Linux operating system fundamentals, specifically Redhat Enterprise distribution.
Working knowledge of networking concepts and protocols desirable.
Excellent documentation skills.
Some experience in writing short scripts in bash, perl, or python
Additional experience in any of the following technologies is desirable: dns, dhcp, directory services (ldap), radius, vpns, vmware, storage, rundeck, Atlassian suite.
Programming experience in python a plus.
