The Instruction and Outreach Librarian collaborates with faculty and librarians to build students' information literacy skills, ensuring that students are prepared to conduct undergraduate research, excel in their coursework, and succeed at the university and beyond.
Collaborate with faculty to develop students' information literacy skills by integrating library instruction into the curriculum, with particular emphasis on the General Education Program and First-Year Seminar.
Design and deliver instruction in a variety of formats, including classroom visits, online guides and tutorials, individual consultations, and workshops.
Provide responsive reference and information services to a diverse population of students and faculty. Train work-study students to provide peer research assistance.
Help develop training and professional development programs and materials for librarians, staff and work-study students in both libraries.
Attend Curriculum Committee or other committees/meetings that will deepen knowledge of revisions to curriculum and First Year Seminar.
Collaborate on collection development and help select library materials, encompassing input from faculty, librarians, students, and other members of the community.
Collaborate with the Associate Library Director to develop an enterprise-wide instruction program and a plan for assessment.
Collaborate with, and support, librarians and staff at both campus libraries to ensure optimal service is given to all members of the MSMU community.
Weekends and evenings may be required.
Run reports and create summaries for annual reports.
Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Libraries.
Knowledge of learning pedagogies and the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy; ALA Code of Ethics; teaching and learning services, assessment, and collection development trends in academic libraries.
Knowledge of copyright and open access best practices.
Familiarity with critical information literacy preferred.
Abilities and Skills:
Engaging and effective teaching methods, a passion for working with students, interpersonal communication skills, and the ability to motivate others and work effectively in a team environment.
The position requires a strong customer service orientation and effective outreach and leadership skills, as well as the ability to analyze data to assess services and make adjustments to improve.
Excellent written, oral, and presentation skills.
English comprehension and communication proficiency required; Spanish or another second language desired.
Demonstrated ability to be flexible, adapt, and learn new skills.
Ability to work well with diverse students and faculty and with non-traditional students.
Use of library technologies such as LibGuides/LibApps, OCLC, journal databases, citation management tools, online collaboration tools, and Microsoft Office required. Preferred: tutorial software, course management systems, content management systems, data visualization, GIS.
ALA-accredited Master's Degree in Library and/or Information Science.
At least one year of instructional experience in an academic library, preferably working with undergraduates.
Experience with instructional design and assessment required.
A minimum of one year of providing college or university-level reference services or similar experience.
Experience with digital humanities, research data management, or scholarly communication desired.
