INSTITUTE OF HUMAN VIROLOGY (MGO4)
The University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) School of Medicine (SOM) - Office of Development is currently seeking a Director of Development, Institute of Human Virology (IHV). This position will focus on soliciting gifts of at least $50,000 but will specifically focus on 7- and 8-figure gifts to ensure the long-term viability of this highly successful clinical and research program. The primary focus of major gift fundraising for the Institute of Human Virology (IHV) is to build a robust endowment – professorships and research funds.

Manages a portfolio of 100 to 150 significant prospects, in the range of $50,000 to over $1 million. Develops strategies for cultivation, solicitation and stewardship for the assigned portfolio to close key gifts within the assigned departments.
Works with assigned leadership to identify fundraising priorities, develop a broad case for support, and implement strategies for securing major gifts.
Develops strategies with faculty leaders to highlight clinical needs and basic and clinical research within the Institute in order to close key collaborative gifts.
Solicits gifts directly and prepares and briefs other senior colleagues for solicitations.
Collaborates with Administrative Deans and Board of Advisors to broaden support for the Institute.
Provides regular reports to IHV and UMSOM leadership on the progress of major gift fundraising.
Travels regionally and nationally and interacts regularly with high-level prospects and faculty members. The Director of Development should anticipate spending 50% of time off campus, and 33% of time traveling.
Works in collaboration with the Institute leadership to engage its Board of Advisors in fundraising activities on behalf of the Institute. Will actively cultivate and solicit Board members and work with them to identify additional donors capable of making significant major gifts to the Institute.
Other related duties as needed.
Education: Bachelor's degree in a related field, Master's degree preferred.
Experience: Seven (7) years spent progressively building a background in the various departmental functions with at least three years of experience at a management/leadership level.
Fundraising experience in an academic medical or research institute setting are preferred. The salary is competitive and commensurate with education and experience.

An ability to work with faculty, staff, and senior administration to develop major gift donor opportunities.
An ability to establish strong collaborative ties with faculty and senior administration in achieving fundraising objectives.
Knowledge of best practices of prospect cultivation and solicitation.
An ability to establish goals, structures and processes necessary for implementing a mission and strategic vision.
Strong leadership, coaching and teambuilding skills to strengthen and cultivate relationships.
Strategic and analytical thinking skills coupled with the ability to solve problems and make decisions.
An ability to prioritize ongoing and new projects, as well as conduct research and gather information.
Verbal/written communication, presentation and interpersonal skills.
Flexibility in the performance of other duties as required or assigned by the leadership of UMSOM.
