Mass Spectrometry Center and GLP Analyses Open Rank Position - (1600005M)
The Mass Spectrometry Center in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences in the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy is searching for creative, motivated, and disciplined candidates to join a dynamic team. We are looking for enthusiastic candidates who have a passion for research in Pharmaceutical Sciences. There are two (2) positions and consideration of education and experience will determine the rank of the selected candidates.
This position will ensure design, development, documentation and implementation of research procedures and protocols using a variety of complex activities; contribute technical leadership in the area of LC-MS/MS quantification and related mass spectrometry and analytical topics; participate in establishing and then managing Good Laboratory Practice facilities and capabilities and conduct Good Laboratory Practice analyses. Rank and salary will be commensurate with education and experience.
For consideration for all job titles, candidate's research specialization / experience MUST be in mass spectrometry with a focus one or more of the following areas: analytical chemistry, metabolomics, lipidomics, proteomics, biomarkers, drug analysis, protein structure, quantitative mass spectrometry or mass spectrometry imaging. Priority areas include metabolomics and quantitative mass spectrometry, however outstanding candidates will be considered in ANY area of expertise. Experience or willingness to learn development and validation of LC-MS/MS assays and GLP procedures is a plus for one of the positions.
Possible job ranks for the two (2) available positions include:
Manager: Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or a related field of study ; Six (6) years of experience in laboratory research including four (4) years in mass spectrometry; and Two (2) years of direct supervision or responsibility for training, work coordination, and monitoring the work of others.
Lead Laboratory Research Specialist: Bachelor's degree in chemistry or a related field of study; Five (5) years of experience in laboratory research including three (3) years in mass spectrometry. Consideration may be given for a unique combination of education and experience.* Laboratory Research Specialist : Bachelor's degree in Chemistry or a related field of study, Three (3) years of experience in laboratory research including two (2) years in mass spectrometry. Consideration may be given for a unique combination of education and experience.*
This position may require training related to occupational safety and health, environmental compliance, shipping of hazardous materials and/or ionizing radiation.
*Experience and/or education may be substituted under the following circumstances: bachelor's degree in an unrelated field with at least 18 credits in a field related to the research of the laboratory, or bachelor's degree in unrelated field with at least one year of experience in a field directly related to the research laboratory. Except for qualification is established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year – for - year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Depending on the level hired, the candidate will be expected to have some or all of the following knowledge, skills or abilities:
Ability to understand and utilize scientific/medical terminology and research theory in both oral and written communications.
Ability to take a central role in performing and directing various advanced routine, and maintenance procedures.
Ability to perform independent projects and to serve as a consultant in area of technical specialty.
Ability to design and recommend changes to research projects and/or area of technical specialty.
Ability to use measurable and verifiable information for making decisions or judgments.
Knowledge and assurance of compliance issues related to laboratory activities.
Skill in statistical programming, interpretation and data analysis using statistical software as well as spreadsheet and database software applications.
Ability to diagnose equipment malfunctions and dismantles and repair equipment.
Ability to network with, and present information to key groups and individuals.
Ability to conduct library research and participate in the preparation of journal articles
Comprehensive knowledge of research techniques, including mass spectrometry, chromatography, and various sample preparation techniques is required.
Comprehensive knowledge of analytical chemistry, metabolomics, lipidomics, proteomics, drug analysis, protein structure, quantitative mass spectrometry or mass spectrometry imaging is required.
Comprehensive knowledge of the operation of mass spectrometers by one or more of the following manufacturers: Bruker, Thermo, Agilent, Waters, AB Sciex is preferred.
Ability to conduct or develop appropriate sample preparation methods
Ability to conduct, implement, or develop appropriate data anlysis methods
Ability to develop and validate quantitative LC-MS/MS methodology.
Ability to develop and implement new LC-MS/MS methodology or other mass spectrometry-based techniques documented by reference in publications or grant proposals.
Ability to expand or develop new skills, as needed, based on information from literature, in collaboration with other laboratories or vendors, or by interacting with colleagues at meetings or professional presentations.
Ability to develop and follow SOPs, develop and maintain collaborative connections with the investigators.
Ability to participate in training staff, students or fellows advanced techniques by mass spectrometry used in the center through informal discussions or formal workshops offered by the Center.
Ability to operate and maintain highly technical mass spectrometers and chromatographic equipment.
Experience with Good Laboratory Practice requirements for sample preparation and analysis is preferred.
Strong history of demonstrated research success working both independently and as part of a team, preferred.
Strong written and verbal communications are required.
