The Department of Pathology, Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine/VCU Health System is seeking a full-time Molecular Genetics Pathology faculty member to serve as Assistant/Associate Director of the Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory. Academic rank for this position will be at the Assistant Professor or Associate Professor level, commensurate with experience.
Oversee clinical services of the Molecular Diagnostics Laboratory. The position supervises medical technologists in performance of molecular genetics clinical diagnostic tests, in trouble shooting these procedures, and in assuring quality control and quality assurance aspects of testing. Furthermore, the position supervises the Molecular Diagnostics educational program which trains residents and pathologists in basic molecular diagnostic techniques.
The successful candidate will have earned an M.D., M.D/Ph.D., or Ph.D degree and have board certification or board eligibility in Molecular Genetics Pathology through the American Board of Pathology and Medical Genetics or Clinical Molecular Genetics through the American Board of Medical Genetics. The successful candidate must have experience in clinical molecular genetic testing by the polymerase chain reaction, direct DNA sequencing and Next Generation Sequencing for inherited disorders and neoplastic disease. Working knowledge of Next Generation clinical testing including variant annotation and clinical interpretation is required. Experience in teaching and supervising personnel in and the performance and use of these techniques is required. Knowledge regarding regulatory issues as they apply to the field of molecular genetic diagnostics is required. The successful candidate must have a demonstrated interest and ability in research and scholarly activity. Demonstrated experience, at fellowship or faculty level, working in and fostering a diverse faculty, staff, and student environment or a commitment to do so as a faculty member at VCU is required.
