Assistant Teaching Professor in Mechanical and/or Aerospace Engineering (Lecturer with Potential of Security of Employment)
The Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE, http://maeweb.ucsd.edu/) at the University of California, San Diego invites applications for an Assistant Teaching Professor (also termed Lecturer with Potential for Security of Employment). We are particularly interested in candidates in the core areas of mechanical and/or aerospace engineering. Generally, teaching professors are full-time employees who are expected to teach 6 courses per year. In addition to demonstrating excellence in teaching, individuals in this position are expected to engage in professional activities and service related to the pedagogical mission of the department and university.
Candidates should demonstrate innovative teaching methodologies, potential to teach core and advanced lecture and/or laboratory courses in mechanical and/or aerospace engineering, and be highly motivated to improve the undergraduate student experience. The required job duties include teaching and mentoring of university students, curriculum development, accreditation, service activities, supervising undergraduate research, and mentoring undergraduate teams in their professional activities (e.g. Formula SAE). A candidate for appointment, merit increase, or promotion in this series is judged by the following criteria:
Teaching, of truly exceptional quality and so specialized in character that it cannot be done with equal effectiveness by Professor
Professional achievement and activity; an appointee in the LSOE series is expected to maintain currency in the profession and pedagogy
University and public service; Educational leadership beyond the campus and contributions to instruction-related activities
Preferred candidates will have demonstrated accomplishments in areas contributing to diversity, equity, and inclusion, such as increasing the access and success of underrepresented students or faculty in engineering. Candidates should have a desire to participate in the School's diversity initiatives (http://www.jacobsschool.ucsd.edu/diversity/).
Rank: Assistant Teaching Professor (also termed Lecturer with Potential for Security of Employment). This appointment confers membership in the Academic Senate, and, contingent upon promotion, security of employment. Salary: Level of appointment will be commensurate with qualifications; salary based on UC pay scales and market conditions.
