Berkeley Law's Pro Bono Program offers students the opportunity to engage in meaningful community legal service as early as their first semester of law school. Students can apply to participate in our Student-Initiated Legal Services Projects (SLPS) or volunteer independently with community organizations. Students do not receive academic credit for participating in SLPS or other pro bono work, and we do not have a pro bono requirement. SLPS are the heart of our Pro Bono Program and a vital part of the first-year experience at Berkeley Law. These pro bono projects are founded and led by Berkeley Law students. The Pro Bono Program serves as an introduction to Berkeley Law's experiential education program for most Berkeley Law first-year students, and SLPS provide leadership opportunities to the upper-division students.
Primary Responsibilities: The Coordinator for the Pro Bono Program will continue to build, coordinate and supervise the Pro Bono Program and the Student-Initiated Legal Services Projects, working closely with the Pro Bono Program Faculty Co-Directors. The Coordinator will operate as a part of a team that focuses on public interest and service learning activities at the law school, and works to raise the profile of pro bono both within the law school and in the larger community.
Key Responsibilities: Oversee approximately 30 student-led pro bono projects and other student pro bono opportunities Train and supervise student leaders Manage recruiting process for new participants Prepare content for and lead mandatory orientation and assist in developing and organizing other trainings for new participants Communicate and collaborate with supervising attorneys, law school administration, law school pro bono professionals, and other stakeholders Oversee budget and maintain website Coordinate with Alumni & Development in identifying and reaching out to donors Help students develop, identify and connect with new pro bono projects Build and support collaborations with community organizations on pro bono projects Develop and maintain mechanisms to enhance relationships with pro bono partners at legal organizations, law schools, and other relevant stakeholders
Minimum Qualifications Required (at the time of application): J.D. degree or equivalent degree.
Preferred Qualifications: Excellent writing and communication skills Outstanding mentoring, advising, and interpersonal skills Previous teaching experience and/or equivalent facilitation experience Previous experience working with and supervising law students Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage multiple tasks Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment Ability to relate to diverse audiences – students, faculty, academic administrators, practicing lawyers – within the legal profession A strong sense of initiative, including a commitment to pro bono work and experiential legal education
