Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:
The Community and Economic Development (CED) program of Iowa State University Extension and Outreach is seeking qualified candidates for a Field Specialist I or II position focused on engagement with, and capacity building for minority businesses and organizations in Des Moines and around the state of Iowa.
CED Field Specialists work within the Knowledge Teams of the CED program unit – teams comprised of faculty and specialists located throughout the state – to build community capacity and improve the quality of life in Iowa's communities by developing and delivering educational programs, fostering networks, facilitating group processes, general consulting and technical assistance to a variety of audiences throughout Iowa. The successful candidate for this specific position will work as a member of the team promoting equity and inclusion in Iowa communities, while collaborating with the leadership and local economies teams to:
- Develop and deliver educational programs with the goal of building capacity among minority-led organizations and businesses in Iowa's major metropolitan areas. - Collaborate with minority-led businesses and organizations to assess educational needs, conduct effective cooperative educational efforts, provide subject matter support, and build strong networks among these businesses and organizations to build community capacity. - Network with philanthropic and other granting organizations to build awareness and support for educational efforts in minority communities.
The individual's program delivery responsibilities will be primarily focused in Des Moines, but will also require engagement in other communities statewide. Historically the individual in this position has been deeply engaged in the activities listed above with the African and African American communities in Des Moines and other Iowa metropolitan regions.
This position will be filled at the Field Specialist I or II level. In addition to Field Specialist I duties, a Field Specialist II will create and deliver comprehensive and complex programming; conduct needs assessment activities; identify and implement innovative ways to meet clients' needs; take an active role in the development of interdisciplinary programming; and provide leadership/supervision and subject-matter expertise at the local and state level.
The successful candidate will possess exceptional analytical, public relations, and written and verbal communication skills in order to effectively represent community economic development programs to the public. The candidate will also have the ability to prioritize multiple ongoing tasks concurrently to ensure immediate deadlines are met. Outstanding organizational and facilitation skills, and strong attention to detail will also be needed in order be effective in this role.
Required Education and Experience:
Bachelor’s degree and 3 years of related experience.
Preferred Education and Experience:
Degree in Community Development, Business, Adult Education, Sociology, Political Science or other closely related field
Additional years of relevant professional experience.
Demonstrated experience working with African and African-American led businesses and organizations.
Relevant experience in community and/or economic development.
This position is located in Des Moines, and requires statewide travel to carry out Extension and Outreach responsibilities. Candidates must have access to their own transportation. The duties of this position require willingness to work evenings and weekends.
