The Director of Annual Giving Programs reports to the Assistant Vice President of Engagement and Annual Programs (AVP) and is responsible for planning, directing, marketing and managing comprehensive annual giving programs for Caltech. The Director will supervise a staff of six professionals.
Create and lead successful and comprehensive annual giving programs with a strong focus on the growth of the Caltech Fund.
Develop marketing and outreach programs targeted at enhancing alumni giving, parent giving, reunion giving, and giving from other select donor audiences, through strategic use of engagement tools such as e-mail, social media, web, tele-fund, and direct mail.
Segment strategically to sustain giving, engage alumni, parents and friends, and increase dollars raised.
The annual programs director will develop and implement a comprehensive annual giving plan and calendar
Grow and oversee a volunteer structure to advance annual giving programs.
Guide the staff in creating and implementing strategic initiatives that directly impact the operation and goals of the Caltech Fund.
Create and implement strategy for an integrated fundraising program that drives participation and dollars contributed, and increases individual giving at all levels of the annual giving pipeline.
Define clear strategies for increasing alumni participation rates, both overall and amongst segments with high potential.
Guide the integration of robust, leading-edge analytics, to meet and exceed the primary annual giving metrics- annual donor goal, annual revenue goal, annual retention goal, and undergraduate participation goal.
Reports and analyzes annual fund results; evaluates annual giving programs; recommends and implements changes to improve results.
Generate and present annual giving progress reports throughout the year. Analyze constituent income from various appeals and approaches, and segment or modify strategies as results indicate.
Conduct best practices reviews of leadership annual giving at other institutions, particularly peer institutions, ensuring that Caltech is a leader as measured externally in terms of total dollars, percentage participation, consistency of giving and average gift size and internally in terms of clean data, ease of access to data and timely donor stewardship.
Proactively develop initiatives and strategies in collaboration with the AVP to increase the effectiveness of Annual Giving within the framework of the Break Through campaign.
Provide the structure and facilitate the Trustee Annual Fund in collaboration with the Vice President for Development and Institute Relations.
Lead, manage, and coach a dynamic team of six professionals to drive the productivity of the Annual Giving team; establish and monitor annual team/individual work planning; create supportive and targeted professional development plans for individual team members.
Work closely with advancement services, individual giving officers, the Caltech Associates team, alumni relations, and communications colleagues to create and facilitate a successful and enduring annual giving program.
Serve as a member of the Engagement and Annual Programs Senior Management Team
Serve as a member for the DIR Leadership Group
Oversee departmental budget
Develop literature, policy statements, and events that enhance annual giving
Other duties as assigned by the AVP.
Six-to-nine years of fundraising experience with demonstrated expertise in annual giving.
A proven track record of success in running annual fund programs, including volunteer management.
The ideal candidate will be an ambitious and motivated professional, who values a collaborative working environment and who will be able to establish strong, interpersonal relationships with academic leaders, alumni donors and advancement staff.
Thorough understanding of a development operation in a complex environment.
Experience in managing progressively successful annual fundraising campaigns, running direct mail, telemarketing, online giving programs, and a proven record of personally closing leadership gifts.
Data analysis, technical competencies, and ability for working with sophisticated reporting.
Experience managing a team.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Familiarity with computer systems and fundraising databases.
Excellent organizational and follow-through skills; Ability to manage multiple projects and see projects through to a timely completion; Ability to work independently, with minimal supervision.
Experience in budget planning and oversight.
Candidates must be comfortable with a flexible work schedule, including travel and some evening and weekend work.
Demonstrate the ability to practice and adhere to organizational values.
Previous work experience in a research university environment.
Candidates will have an authentic curiosity about science and technology, as well as a strong appreciation for the extraordinary intellectual accomplishments and challenges of Caltech's faculty and students, along with the grace and enthusiasm necessary to serve as an ambassador for Caltech annual giving.
