Plans proactive strategies to educate university supervisory staff Works with Learning and Development Team to recommend, develop and facilitate educational sessions for university supervisors to help develop conflict mediation and cooperative supervision skills. Advises the CHRO of exposures and risks, including issues involving the termination process, performance management, and supervisor development. Oversees the process of identifying employees who are Mandated Reporters under the law and ensure the university is in compliance under California Penal Code §§11164 et seq. Works with the Director of Learning and Development to organize annual performance management training. Organizes and manages the annual performance evaluation process.
Plans and implements employee recognition and wellness events Organizes and manages the annual Employee Recognition Luncheon. Organizes and manages the annual Community Picnic. Organizes the CHR Award luncheon twice a year. Facilitates the employee award review. Assists CHR chair in management of Community of Human Resources committee (CHR@USD). Works with other HR areas to plan, develop, coordinate and communicate programs related to employee wellness (Being Well @ USD).
Supervision Hires, trains, supervises, and mentors HR Generalist/Employee Relations Coordinator and Auxiliary HR Coordinator (along with student employees on occasion). Defines roles and responsibilities, distributes work, monitors results, and verifies accountability. Provides training/development opportunities.
Other Works closely with CHRO and other Directors/Managers in strategic planning, policy-making, and process and procedure development. Represents human resources on various campus committees and task forces. Prepares reports and makes presentations. Special projects and miscellaneous duties as needed or assigned.
Bachelor's degree in Business Administration, Human Resources, Organizational Development, Psychology, or a related field. Minimum of five years of human resources experience, at least three of which are in the employee relations function and two years of supervisory experience. Previous experience in employment policy and program development and implementation with demonstrated achievement of successful results. Knowledge of federal and state labor and EEO laws. Ability to work in an environment that evokes consensus of constituents to successfully implement practices and programs. Previous experience as an effective change agent. Must possess conflict resolution skills. Excellent written and oral communication skills, strong customer service orientation.
Master's degree strongly preferred. Prior recent human resources experience in higher education, or a service organization. Strong employee relations experience, including the ability to handle employee grievances in a fair and balanced manner. Experience in wellness programming preferred. Progressive experience in equal opportunity. SPHR preferred. Ability to communicate in Spanish preferred.
Knowledge of: Must possess knowledge of state and federal labor laws, legislation and regulations. Must be highly familiar with employee rights, leaves of absence, payroll controls, and HRIS reporting. Must possess knowledge of employer and employee legal rights, duties and responsibilities.
Skills: High level use of negotiation techniques, interviewing skills and investigative procedures. Strong administrative, organizational and analytical skills. Excellent interpersonal skills with a work ethic that focuses on the delivery of services. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (verbal and written) with an affinity for details. The ability to express opinions in a persuasive, diplomatic and thoughtful manner. A strong desire to be helpful to colleagues throughout the organization. Character, integrity and the ability to build trust with colleagues.
