The HMC Public Health STD Clinic has an outstanding opportunity for a full-time Database Specialist. The Database Specialist will provide data management, Access database administration, and programming support for clinic operations as well as multiple research studies and sexually transmitted disease surveillance activities. Additionally, the database specialist will conduct basic analyses to provide summary reports, and depending on the skill and experience of the individual, participate in more complex data analyses.
The Database Specialist will work directly with a team that includes HIV/STD program administrators, principal investigators, study coordinators, epidemiologists, data collection staff, and field services staff (disease investigators). Additional responsibilities will include ongoing evaluation, monitoring, coordination, and implementation of data management and database development tools and infrastructures.
The ideal candidate will be able to work independently and show initiative, have excellent communication skills, the ability to work with users with a wide range of computer literacy, and have user training experience. S/he will be working with healthcare professionals at all levels, including physicians and other providers, medical assistants, front line public health staff, and laboratory personnel.
General Duties to Include:
Design, build, and maintain Access database applications, to accommodate system and business need changes.
Design and build data collection instruments.
Produce analysis reports for the purpose of monitoring epidemiologic trends and quality assurance.
Access and integrate data from various data systems, utilizing appropriate programming languages and extract, transfer, load (ETL) tools.
Research alternative data systems and make recommendations for data system improvements/upgrades.
Interact with Federal and off-site investigators and public health officials to coordinate data collection, monitoring and pooling for multicenter projects and national surveillance efforts.
Coordinate data sharing with researchers and epidemiologists in the HIV/STD Program.
Monitor data quality and insure data integrity.
Develop a broad understanding of all HIV/STD Program data systems and guide the program and staff in streamlining systems.
Thorough documentation of systems, including changes and business rules.
Perform data analysis
Advanced training in computer science, programming or informatics
Experience developing REDCap data collection tools
Experience with the Microsoft Stack: SSMS, SSIS and SSRS using Visual Studio
Experience with Epic or other electronic health records systems
Experience in healthcare or medical research data management, and/or biomedical informatics, or a sincere desire to move into this exciting and rewarding area of information technology
Education and/or strong interest in biomedical sciences
Ability to perform statistical analysis
Experience helping staff with general Word, Excel and Outlook support

Bachelor's degree and 1-3 years of experience in database management or master's degree with related practical experience.
Extensive experience with Access SQL and VBA programming.
Experience with SAS programming and T-SQL querying.
Project management experience including managing budgets and timelines, and coordinating efforts across teams.
Excel skills, particularly related to importing and exporting.
Demonstrated experience using extract, transform, and load techniques and technologies, working with Access, Excel, flat file and SAS data sources
Familiarity with IT infrastructure, networking, and Windows operating system administration highly desirable.
Excellent communication and documentation skills
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.
