The Rhode Island Innovative Policy Lab (RIIPL) at Brown University is a collaboration between Brown University and the Rhode Island Office of the Governor. We use data and rigorous scientific research to support policy makers as they work to alleviate poverty and increase economic opportunity with efficient, effective, fact-based policy. RIIPL is seeking a talented and creative professional for the role of Executive Director to lead, grow, and preserve the mission and impact of the organization.
The Executive Director will report directly to the Faculty Director and provide quarterly updates to RIIPLâ™s Advisory Board, which consists of members of the Rhode Island State government, Brown University administration, and members of the Laura and John Arnold Foundation. The Executive Director will provide strategic and operational support for RIIPLâ™s staff, programs, and the expansion and execution of its mission. This is a senior leadership role that will suit a person who is intellectually curious, and enjoys working with leading researchers and committed government partners in an energetic, innovative, and collegial environment.
Specifically, the Executive Director will be responsible for:
1. Strategic Leadership & Management (40%)
Provides leadership for RIIPL, including developing a strategic plan for the organization that will enable it to fulfill its mission and increase its impact on the state of Rhode Island and nationally
Builds and maintains long-lasting, meaningful, and trusted partnerships with government
Collaborates with the Rhode Island Governorâ™s office, and RIIPLâ™s Faculty Director to develop and execute the project agenda
Develops successful partnerships and collaborations with Brown University faculty, students, and senior administration
Builds and maintains relationships with non-profits, philanthropy, and private sector
2. Outreach/ Communications/ Fundraising (30%)
Creates and executes a strategic communications plan that includes translating and
Manages and cultivates existing relationships with funders and identifies and develops funding opportunities from additional sources
Serves as the spokesperson for RIIPL to build awareness about the organizationâ™s activities, develop important partnerships, and build community and develop a vibrant ecosystem of innovators
Plans and directs conferences, trainings, and otherevents
3. Operations/Fiscal & Risk Management (30%)
Promotes a positive and efficient work environment that fosters passion for the mission, creativity, and teamwork and respect for all members of the organization
Serves as the final, responsible party for meeting deadlines, partnership commitments, and grant reporting, with an obligation to preserve RIIPLâ™s reputation for always meeting commitments on-time and on-budget
Works with the RIIPL management team, the Faculty Director and RIIPL Advisory Board to develop an organizational infrastructure that will support anticipated growth and ensures that programmatic objectives are supported internally
Identifies top talent, mentors and supervises team members, oversees the execution of field projects, and prioritizes, delegates, and manages effectively
Supports inclusive annual strategic planning process and ensures planning decisions are used in setting annual project and organizational goals
Oversees the implementation of a financial model for ongoing operations that ensures reasonable revenues and institutional support sufficient to maintain programmatic activities
Identifies and evaluates the risks to the organization, staff, partners, finances, goodwill, and implements measures to control risks
Oversees and monitors the program budget
Oversees the management of financial and human resource processes
The ideal Executive Director is a dynamic and seasoned leader with demonstrated experience working with various constituencies in government and an academic setting. The ED will be committed to the mission of RIIPL and will have outstanding leadership, coaching, policy, and relationship management experience.

Expert at navigating policy, political, and communications challenges, and working across levels of government to improve outcomes
Understanding of rigorous empirical research in economics and datascience
Ability to work effectively and collaboratively with teams, stakeholders, partners and a diverse range of groups
Strategic, entrepreneurial, and rigorous approach to developing ideas and designing solutions
Passion, integrity, dedicated, mission-driven, team-oriented, and self-directed
Commitment to building and retaining a diverse workforce
Education & Experience
At least seven years of work experience, including significant management and leadership experience. Domestic policy, particularly in social programs, and government experience preferred.
Advanced degree in Economics, Public Policy, Political Science, Business, or Law
Graduate level coursework in statistics, economics, and econometrics or research methods is desirable
This is a grade 14 position, funded through soft money and renewable based on grant funding.
