The Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine invites applications for a 100% research faculty position as the Director in the Department of Radiology, Small Animal Imaging Core. The successful candidate may be appointed open rank.
Applicants must have a PhD.
This position will be responsible for Administrative Duties.
Administrative duties includes, but not limited to; managing the Small Animal Imaging Core, identifying research opportunities and collaborating with other research faculty to creating research opportunities, managing facilities schedules and budget, manage and monitor two research staff, complete performance annual reviews and recommending changes as necessary. Applicant must have a demonstrated commitment to promoting a diverse environment.
The ideal candidate will also have a their own laboratory and have funded research involving one or more of the imaging suites described below. Candidates for tenure track appointments must have a history of funded research. Research start-up funds and protected time to pursue academic interests are available.
The Small Animal Imaging Core (SAIC) is a core facility of the Iowa Institute for Biomedical Imaging (IIBI) housed in the Pappajohn Biomedical Discovery Building. The SAIC occupies 5500 square feet of space, including 7 imaging suites, 8 support rooms, and is contiguous to the primary barrier housing facility on the University of Iowa campus. The purpose of the SAIC is to provide instrumentation and technical services for non-invasive anatomical and physiological imaging of small animals (mice and rats) and other biological samples. The core instrumentation consists of several imaging modalities that are specifically designed for scanning small animals;
micro-PET (Siemens Inveon DPET)
micro-CT (Siemens Inveon CT (10 µm resolution)
SPECT(Siemens Inveon SPECT)
optical imaging (Carestream MSFX-pro)
fluorescent imaging (Carestream MSFX-pro)
3D X-ray/CT Microscope (Zeiss Xradia 520 Versa, submicron resolution).
7T Preclinical MRI (7.0T GE 901 Discovery MRI small animal scanner) available in the SAIC space, administered through the MRI Research Core
high-resolution microultrasound imaging (Visualsonics Vevo) is available in SAIC space administered through the Weiss laboratory.
Optical Coherence Tomography (Equipment provided through MGH P41)
Additional equipment is available for use by investigators for whole tissue bio-distribution assays and autoradiography.
The Core operates a small image-processing laboratory including 4 high-end workstations with a suite of multi-modality software available for use, including PMOD, and Inveon Research Workspace, both fully equipped with 3D and pharmacokinetic packages. The core also has its own 12 TB RAID5 networked archive system, mirrored to offsite research networked storage.
The SAIC, in collaboration with the UIHC PET Imaging Center, has access to an onsite cyclotron and radiochemistry laboratory. Routinely produced radiopharmaceuticals include [F-18]FDG to image glucose metabolism,[F-18]FLT to image and measure cellular proliferation, [F-18]Fluoride for bone metabolism, [C-11]Acetate, [C-11]PIB, [Ga-68]DOTATOC, [Ga-68]PSMA-HBED-CC, [Ga-68]Pentixafor (and other novel peptides).
Services Provided: The Core routinely supports all small animal imaging experiments through the following mechanisms:
1) Project Consultation - Prior to scheduling, all projects are discussed between the investigator and SAIC personnel to optimize the experimental design.
2) Regulatory Assistance – Prior to imaging, all projects must have necessary regulatory approvals, including having Animal Care and Use and Review Form (ACURF) and radiation safety approvals. Core staff are intimately familiar with these procedures are routinely provide guidance to investigators.
3) Budgeting Assistance – Before any studies are commenced, costs associated with each aspect of the project are determined.
4) Pre-imaging Animal Prep – Any major or complex surgeries will be the responsibility of the investigator. Minor surgeries including catheterizations will be performed on-site by SAIC personnel on the day of an imaging study.
5) Imaging and Reconstruction – SAIC personnel will be responsible for all imaging and reconstructions that occur within its laboratories. A full range of tomographic reconstruction options are available operating on 4 dedicated, off-line, high speed quad-core processing computers.
