PH 531 - Community Engagement/ Health Education (Spring 2018) Department of Public Health College of Education, Health and Human Services
The Department of Public Health at California State University San Marcos seeks a part-time lecturer for Spring 2018 to teach PH 531 (Community Engagement/ Health Education). The course meets in the evening once a week and all courses are taught in person on the CSUSM main campus and it is a hybrid course. The spring semester starts on January 22nd and ends March 16th the first 8-week session (8W1) of the term. The candidate should have experience in teaching in an institution of higher learning.
The Department of Public Health at CSUSM is comprised of a Master of Public Health (MPH) program with two concentrations in Health Promotion & Education and Global Health. The program’s vision is to enhance wellness and reduce health disparities locally and abroad through engaged partnerships in community-based interventions and practice by preparing culturally intelligent professionals.
The MPH program currently supports four tenure-track faculty and one full-time lecturer. Additionally, the program enjoys and sustains long-term relationships with community-based health-related organizations as well as the regional public health agencies. The program is currently seeking accreditation and has been approved to begin its self-study by CEPH, the nationally recognized accrediting body for schools and programs in Public Health.
Responsibilities: Key tasks may include (but are not limited to):
Develops and delivers class instruction for a graduate course in Community Engagement/ Health Education.
Provides competency-based education through the development of instructional plans that meet course competencies. Additionally, the development of activities should support lesson objectives and align with CEPH accreditation criteria requirements.
Teaches essential theoretical and practical perspectives on ethnics and cultural factors for community health practice, as well as models and culturally-appropriate practices for working with ethnicity, gender, and social issues.
Explores the health implications of community demographics, disparities, multicultural populations, communication, aging, sexual orientation, children, and future challenges
Delivers learning-centered instruction by establishing a classroom environment conducive to learning, engagement, and student success.
Promotes student success by showing flexibility in style and work schedule as well as exhibiting a passion for teaching and student engagement in the learning process.
Manages the learning environment by keeping accurate records and submission of grades and other reports in a timely manner.
Enforces applicable college and university academic policies and procedures.
A Master of Public Health (MPH) or Master of Science in Public Health (MSPH).
Experience working with college students or teaching in an institution of higher learning.
Ability to communicate effectively and work cooperatively with core faculty and colleagues on an ethnically and culturally diverse campus.
A doctoral degree in Public Health or a closely related field (e.g., PhD, MD, DrPH, ScD, JD, etc.)
Demonstrated commitment to diversity and ability to communicate with culturally diverse groups of students is highly desired.
Preference will be given to applicants with demonstrated commitment to diversity and/or intercultural competence with diverse groups in relation to teaching.
