The Web Accessibility Lead will manage Montclair State University’s website accessibility initiative. The Lead is responsible for ensuring Montclair State University’s website conforms to the requirements set forth by the W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.0) which require the University provide equal access to its content and programs, regardless of user ability. The Lead will provide direction and establish necessary standards for meeting W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0. The Lead will also establish an enterprise-wide system for training, support, quality control and monitoring.
Confirms all montclair.edu page templates and tools follow accessibility best practices, according to the W3C’s Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.0
Works with the University's selected third party auditor/vendor to perform a content audit of existing website content and develop and execute corrective actions.
Manages a team (consultant vendor, Montclair State University legal representatives, faculty/staff/student representatives) to create, communicate and maintain accessibility-related policies and guidelines.
Facilitates resolution of any concerns/complaints related to accessibility of montclair.edu content or functionality.
Supports the University’s adherence to accessibility technology standards by managing the comprehensive training and tools provided to website developers and content editors for making digital content more accessible, including images, videos, PDFs, forms and other content.
Provides digital strategy and project management support for other Web Services initiatives as needed.
S/he will be a seasoned manager who can effectively lead teams in working collaboratively with partners in Advancement and campus-wide. S/he represents University Advancement on key University committees and ad hoc teams that address use of technology for mass communication and collaborates with constituencies across campus to identify ways the website can most effectively support strategic objectives.
MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Partner with University Communications staff and clients campus-wide to ensure sites meet current WCAG 2.0 AA standards.
Provide training, guidance, trouble-shooting and support to college-based network of content managers
Interface with and manage outside agencies and consultants
Contribute to development of University web policies, guidelines and procedures and monitoring campus WCAG 2.0 AA compliance
Regularly monitor University digital assets to ensure compliance with WCAG standards; establish systems, policies and procedures for updates.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university; web development/design, communications, journalism, marketing or a related field preferred
Minimum of 5-7 years’ experience in digital operations, development, project management or similar management role
5+ years’ experience with Content Management Systems; knowledge of WordPress preferred
5+ years’ project management experience
Higher education experience strongly preferred
Exceptional project management skills: must be able to build consensus and enthusiasm among stakeholders at all levels, juggle multiple projects across different departments and provide clear documentation of progress and deliverables
Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
Creative and knowledgeable about web and digital communications trends
Strong understanding of responsive web design techniques and implementation
Familiarity with and commitment to accessible design and interface
Familiarity with IT process and best practices
Excellent written and verbal skills
Strong interpersonal abilities
Grace under pressure and a highly developed sense of humor are essential to this position.
