Additional background on The Winchendon School:
The Winchendon School has lived a rich tradition of innovation since the school’s founder, Lloyd Harvey Hatch, set out to build a school that “adapted to fit the needs and aspirations of each student” over 90 years ago. Our mission is to facilitate a dynamic learning experience for students who have struggled with or are under-engaged in school, and thus have yet to grow into their potential. We believe this afflicts a great number of students in American schools, and that it is both our opportunity and responsibility to create more dynamic learning with the power to inspire and propel a greater number of students toward academic success.
In 2016, with the goal of creating greater access to a transformative education, the Board of Trustees approved the development of a satellite school as an offshoot from the main campus in Massachusetts. Set to open in the fall of 2018, TWS|Brooklyn is a dynamic community based school, co-located within the Child Development Support Corporation building on Classon Avenue, itself a not-for-profit delivering essential services to the neighborhood. Fundamentally, TWS|Brooklyn is about facilitating access to transformative learning opportunities. We strive to set our tuition point low and have a robust financial aid program to create greater access for students. Our field-based program and student centered schedule allows us to truly use New York City as our classroom. And our co-location with the CDSC fosters authentic community engagement with our neighbors. Access and Opportunity are the central pillars of our institutional design.
The Winchendon School is a coed boarding school serving students in grades 9 through 12 in a highly diverse, multicultural community. Founded in 1926, our School is highly regarded for our skills-based program, very small classes, and persistent feedback for our students. The School is located 65 miles northwest of Boston, and our campus offers extensive educational, athletic, and arts facilitie...s all set in the middle of our own 18-hole, Donald Ross-designed golf course.
