Description: The Department of Visual and Media Arts at Emerson College and the Interdepartmental BFA Program in Comedic Arts at Emerson College invites applications for a full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor position in media studies with a particular specialty in comedy and the intersections of personal, political, and/or national identity. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to, comedy and transnational exchange, LGTBQIA communities and queer media theory, critical race theory, cross-cultural or transnational contexts, and politics and nation. We welcome scholars who work within one or multiple media platforms (film, TV, digital, etc.) and we are open to diverse types of comedy, including but not limited to satire, screwball, musical, sketch, standup, sitcoms, etc. The appointment begins August 23, 2018.

The Department of Visual and Media Arts is a vibrant and engaged community of artists, creators and scholars, with over 100 full and part-time faculty members and over 1500 majors. The department offers BA degrees in Media Studies and Media Production, a BFA in Media Production, an MFA in Film and Media Art, a low residency MFA in Writing for Film and Television, general education courses in art history, and contributes to the interdisciplinary BFA in Comedic Arts. The BFA program in Comedic Arts, the first in the country, draws on the synergies between faculty and curriculum from media arts and studies, literature and dramatic literature, performing arts and performance studies, and comedic writing to create an innovative and comprehensive program of study. With more than 80 first- and second-year majors the program is expected to grow to almost 200 majors in the next two years.
Emerson College is the nations only four-year institution dedicated exclusively to majors in communication and the arts in a liberal arts context. Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. in media studies, cultural studies, or a related field. The successful candidate will have an active research agenda and college-level teaching experience focusing on comedic media forms. A strong commitment to undergraduate education in a residential college environment is essential. Responsibilities include teaching introductory, upper-level undergraduate, and graduate classes in media studies within the Visual and Media Arts department, as well courses for the new Interdepartmental BFA in Comedic Arts. The Department seeks candidates who can contribute to the scope and excellence of a diverse academic community through ongoing engagement with students both inside and outside of the classroom in addition to pursuing creative work, teaching, and service.
