Job Description The Geological Engineering program at the Missouri University of Science and Technology invites applications for a tenure track position at the Assistant Professor level to begin in August 2018. We seek a candidate with expertise in the collection and application of remotely-sensed data (satellite, drones, or aircraft) for water resources, geotechnical, geohazards, renewable energy, ecosystem, and/or climate change research. Candidates must also be proficient in GIS. Experience with computational analysis of large remote sensing data sets, development of new data analysis techniques, and experience working in developing countries will be advantageous. Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, research, and mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students. Teaching will include 2 courses/semester, including remote sensing and introductory GIS, as well as advanced classes in the candidate's field of expertise. A reduced teaching load is customary at the beginning of the appointment. The successful candidate will be expected to develop a dynamic, independent, and externally-funded research program and to collaborate with colleagues on campus in cross-disciplinary research.
Qualifications: A PhD in geological engineering or closely related engineering discipline, or eligibility for professional engineering registration, is required at the time of appointment. Preferred qualifications include experience working with interdisciplinary research teams, university teaching, and interest in developing on-line courses.
Department Description: The Geological Engineering Program has 6 tenured/tenure-track faculty, approximately 80 undergraduate students, 50 on-campus graduate students, and 65 off-campus graduate students. The Geological Engineering Program is part of the department of Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering (GGPE), which has 23 tenured/tenure-track faculty members and approximately 290 undergraduate students and 175 graduate students. The Geological Engineering program offers an ABET-accredited B.S. degree and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees. The department is equipped with two computer labs with a suite of GIS and remote sensing software, and all software is made available to distance students using a central computing network. Rolla is also home to the USGS Center of Excellence for Geospatial Information Science and the National Geospatial Technical Operations Center, which provides many opportunities for collaboration with USGS scientists.
