The Advisor provides educational outreach services to traditionally under-represented adults, promoting educational access and post-secondary educational involvement. The Advisor provides individual and group counseling on admissions, financial aid, academic, and related issues. This position will work in Yakima at the Yakima Valley Community College campus and will represent the Educational Opportunity Center (EOC) for Central Washington University.
Position will have frequent contact with incoming clients and answer questions about program services. Position will also have contact with area high schools within target communities where an Educational Talent Search is not established. Presentations, informational booths, and financial aid workshops will be given at various agencies within target communities established by EOC grant proposal guidelines.
Student Involvement and Counseling:
- Counsel program participants on admissions, financial aid, academic and related issues associated with enrollment in GED or post-secondary education. - Verify eligibility of project participants according to EOC grant guidelines, and admit applicants into the program as appropriate based on availability and need. - Counsel participants on different financial aid options available; interpret student's financial aid award letter and let them know what types of financial aid they will receive. - Counsel and advise on different academic options available to students and provide guidance on picking a major area of study.
- Ensure project participants have completed a CWU-EOC participant intake form that includes an information release form. - Disseminate college admissions and financial aid information at informational booths, college fairs, and job fairs within established target communities and select high schools. - Prepare and give presentations regarding the EOC to public schools and non-profit organizations. - Interact with human service agencies, educational institutions, and educational programs to coordinate services and promote access to post-secondary education. - Establish and maintain contact with educational institutions to which project participants have applied/enrolled. - Assist supervisor with enrollment statistics to complete Annual Performance Report required by the US Department of Education. - Submit monthly reports to supervisor listing demographic and other relevant information of current participants. - Input participant information in Blumen database to track current and past participant information. - Attend staff meetings.
- Conduct admissions and financial aid workshops at agencies and community partners within target communities to assist individuals with completing admissions and financial aid applications.
- Other duties as assigned
Bachelor's Degree in Education, Social Science, Social Work, Family Studies, Marketing or closely related field OR applicable combination of education and/or experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the essential functions of the position.
Experience giving oral presentations to small and large groups.
Knowledge of the unique needs of low-income, first-generation populations.
Working Conditions: Work is performed in an indoor office setting with frequent in-person interactions. It is essential to be able to remain at a desk/computer work station for prolonged periods of time, perform extensive data entry and other computer-related tasks and create/maintain filing systems for departmental records. Some evening or weekend work and/or occasional travel may be required.
