The EH&S Training Program Manager will be primarily responsible for supporting members of the University community in their efforts to learn and effectively use supported technologies and technical tools available through the office of Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) at Northeastern University. This shall be accomplished through maintaining and understanding the employee and student training requirements and needs that can be met through online, one-on-one, and classroom training sessions. The Manager (a) designs and delivers training sessions where possible and/or (b) partners with internal or external subject matter experts to develop and coordinate the delivery of training.
Requires experience and ability to teamwork with key stakeholders of one or more database management software systems (Oracle, MS SQL Server and/or MySQL) throughout the University to determine basic requirements for collecting and tracking data to be used for regulatory compliance submittals, maintaining permits, and preparing internal audit reports on environmental health and safety programs. The Manager will train staff on various end-user databases and related software products. Prepare operational manuals for end-users and technical documentation for database design.
Along with the above aspects of training development and database management, this position provides professional support in a number of other environmental and occupational health programs maintained by the EH&S office to enhance teaching and research activities that utilize hazardous materials or equipment that may potentially impact environmental health or occupational safety regulations. Laboratory safety management presents challenges where problems encountered are often non-routine, requiring review of practices and precedents to recommend effective remedy. Often, precedents generally do not exist for most problems, thus this position requires conducting independent research/analysis to identify appropriate approach.
This position will have a key role in measuring safety performance across several programs; setting priorities for the effective implementation of the Hazard Communication program; and enhancing the safety culture through promotion of best management practices where hazardous materials or equipment is in use or storage.
The position will supervise support staff, contract vendors, coop students, or other help when made available for assigned projects.
Minimum of 5 years experience working in an academic environment providing occupational and environmental health services.
Minimum 1 year experience presenting and facilitating multiple interactive training programs.
Bachelors degree in science, education, instructional design, educational technology, business, computer science or related field.
Knowledge of environmental health and occupational safety principles.
Excellent time and project management skills, including planning, prioritizing, and scheduling multiple ongoing projects.
Advanced knowledge and proficient use of standard computer software packages including Microsoft Excel, Word, Access, PowerPoint, SharePoint, and Outlook.
Experience with training software such as Storyline, Blackboard and Tegrity.
Knowledge of database management software systems including Oracle, MS SQL Server and/or MySQL.
Ability to understand and gather software users (internal and external to EH&S) requirements.
Ability to communicate with vendor and University IT personnel regarding necessary software enhancements and remedy reporting.
Skill in the use, operation, and care of instrumentation and technical equipment: ability to clearly and concisely express ideas orally and in writing; ability to compile and present instructions, ability to understand and interpret complex written regulations and technical reports, ability to effectively use computer applications such as spreadsheets, word processing, e-mail, and database software in performing work assignments.
Excellent coordination and communication skills are needed to effectively negotiate and appropriately influence the safety behavior of individual lab workers, principal investigators, and research lab groups towards best procedures for best management practices.
Ability to assist other EH&S professional staff with chemical emergencies and spill remediation.
