To support this unique campus, the University Relations division is an integrated advancement organization with three primary units: Philanthropy, Alumni Engagement, and Communications and Marketing (including Government and Community Relations). Our Advancement Services, and Operations groups support our ability to successfully engage constituents.
University Relations champions the mission of UC Santa Cruz in many ways, most frequently interfacing with alumni, parents, donors, and friends of the university as we strive to create a culture of philanthropy, strengthen advocacy for the campus, and communicate out about the remarkable achievements of our students, faculty, and alumni.
Under general direction of the Director of Government and Community Relations, the Assistant Director will work independently in the dual roles of initiating relationships with federal, state and local officials and their staffs on behalf of the campus and researching, analyzing and recommending action regarding legislative issues pertinent to the University of California and UC Santa Cruz. This Includes working with agencies and citizen groups.
This position interacts with and is the secondary contact for information requested by campus Senior Leadership and with community leaders, legislators, and their staffs. With the Director, initiates, establishes and stewards relationships with federal, state and local elected officials, community leaders and their staffs on behalf of the campus. The Assistant Director has primary responsibility for developing and administering the campus outreach and advocacy network, including electronic advocacy program management. Regularly attends government, community and other meetings and represents the campus Senior Management and the Director as needed. In consultation with the Director, provides staff support and information about legislative issues to senior campus leadership, faculty, students and volunteers. Under the direction of the Director, interacts with government agencies and elected officials in federal, state and local government. Interacts with community, civic and business groups to develop advocacy programs.
Develops strategies to educate the public on issues regarding higher education and UC Santa Cruz and the University of California. Consistent with campus priorities, implements strategies to educate officials and citizen groups about the UC Santa Cruz campus. Seeks support from legislators and community leaders to further the local plans of the campus. Maintains robust knowledge of the positions of officials on issues of interest to the campus. Designs and conducts tours for legislators and other constituents, working with the Director to identify purpose of visits, agenda, participants and strategic outcomes. Designs and writes reports to Director and Senior Management to analyze issues and recommend actions needed. Coordinates with the Director to provide continuity during absences or scheduling conflicts.
Selected candidate will be required to pass a criminal history background check.
Ability to work occasional nights and weekends as required.
Ability to travel frequently as a University Relations representative.
The ability to move materials weighing up to 50lbs. with or without accommodation.
Work-site location is the UC Santa Cruz Scotts Valley Center, (100 Enterprise Way, Scotts Valley, CA).
Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
3-5 years of experience working in community engagement; public relations; public policy or legislative agenda setting; and/or working at a federal, state, or municipal government level on funding and legislative processes OR An equivalent combination of education and/or experience.
Experience and successful track record in a legislative setting with growing responsibility for analysis and initiating strategic action.
Demonstrated experience working with local, state and federal elected officials and related political considerations.
Solid analytical skills and ability to develop recommendations for positions on matters facing campus.
