Background: Cornell University is located in scenic Ithaca on a hill above Cayuga Lake in the Finger Lakes region of upstate New York. The town and University offer a unique, international community in a beautiful natural setting of waterfalls, gorges, and lakes. The Law School has approximately 606 J.D. students, 112 LL.M. students, including students in the new Masters of Law program in Law, Technology and Entrepreneurship at Cornell Tech in New York City, 11 J.S.D. students, and 61 full-time faculty, and is the home of the Legal Information Institute. The Law Library houses rich and extensive print and digital collections, and promotes an engaging work environment that supports the use of new technologies and a tradition of excellent services. The Law Library instruction program includes a clinic managed by the Library (the Legal Research Clinic and a new Legislation Clinic anticipated to start in fall 2018), for-credit advanced legal research courses, and first-year J.D. and international graduate student legal research. The Law Library additionally partners in collaborative initiatives such as LawArXiv. Professionals and support staff work closely with the Law School and the University Library. The Law Library is part of the Cornell University Library (CUL) system, and advancement occurs through the CUL promotion process.
Digital Resources: In consultation with the Director for Collections, identifies digital and other resources for acquisition and evaluates resources for renewal or deselection. Oversees trials, subscriptions and purchases, authentication systems, passwords, and licenses for digital resources. Represents the library in communications and negotiations with vendors of digital resources. Investigates and reports problems with digital resources. Implements and provides instruction in the use of new digital resources in collaboration with other librarians.
Scholarly Services and LawArXiv Administration: Facilitates the growth of the library's scholarly services and communications, which include an active faculty outreach component, maintenance of scholarship repositories and dissemination of faculty publications. Keeps abreast of trends and communicates changes in scholarly publishing, intellectual property rights, and information technologies that impact access and preservation of scholarly information.
Monitors the email@example.com inbox and responds to incoming inquiries as appropriate. Tracks LawArXiv developments and stakeholder requests for new features, communicating as appropriate to the Center for Open Science. Maintains the lawarxiv.info website and updates training and best practices information as needed. Assists in developing LawArXiv promotional materials and presentations. Co-facilitates the LawArXiv Technical Advisory Committee discussion group.
Reference and Research Services: Provides extensive reference and research services to the law school and university communities in Anglo-American, international, and foreign law and related topics, both in person and virtually. Prepares, revises, and updates research guides.
Faculty Liaison Program: Participates in the faculty liaison and outreach programs and provides liaison support to law school organizations by offering current awareness, assistance with scholarship, and research training.
Instruction: Participates with other librarians in legal research instruction to first-year students as part of the Lawyering program and in collaboration with writing faculty. Develops and teaches advanced legal research courses. Provides research instruction in doctrinal classes as requested by faculty.
Professional Development and University Service: Participates in library planning committees and task forces and engages in campus, regional, and national professional organizations and collaborative activities, and is expected to be professionally active.
Required Qualifications: MLIS or equivalent graduate degree; JD from ABA accredited school or foreign equivalent; minimum of three years of professional experience in a law library. Knowledge of legal research strategies and resources; strong service orientation; demonstrable teaching skills; excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills; ability to work independently and function in a collegial, teamwork-oriented environment which emphasizes customer service and delivery of exemplary library research and faculty services; creativity and adaptability in the face of competing priorities; demonstrated service to the law librarian profession through professional organizations.
Preferred Qualifications: Knowledge of and interest in collection development and acquisitions.
