Job Summary IPAC at Caltech provides science operations and data management for astronomy missions, planning for future projects, and vital science archives. IPAC supports NASA, NSF, and privately funded projects, including: Spitzer, NEOWISE, the Zwicky Transient Facility, the Thirty-Meter Telescope, the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope, and the US centers for Planck, Herschel and Euclid. IPAC operates the NASA/IPAC Infrared Science Archive (IRSA), and the NASA/IPAC Extragalactic Database (NED), and provides administrative support for the Spitzer Science Center and the NASA Exoplanet Science Institute (NExScI). NExScI implements and operates the NASA Exoplanet Archive, the Keck Observatory Archive, the Exoplanet Follow-up Observing Program (ExoFOP) website, administers the NASA portion of Keck Observatory, and hosts the Sagan Summer Workshop.
IPAC/NExScI is seeking an applications developer with experience in DevOps to support development and operations of NExScI Archives and websites, and to contribute to technology development of the IPAC development environment.
Job Duties The successful candidate will be a member the NExScI staff and may also participate in IPAC development activities and technology initiatives.
The ExoFOP and NASA Exoplanet Archive duties will include:
- Design and developmentf web portal and user application program interfaces for data access, searching and downloading, data uploading, and data visualization - Design and development of data ingestion infrastructure for both user uploaded data and archive provided data - Database design and management - User support: responding to questions from users regarding the services - User support: responding to questions about and aiding users in the management of user-uploaded data
The Keck Observatory Archive duties will include:
- Design, develop and maintain interfaces for new data access services and for integrating observations acquired by new instrumentation into the archive - Maintain and operate the KOA test bed; develop and integrate test cases for new services and new instrumentation into the test bed. Participate in systematic testing of services, and track all defects found by such testing until resolution - Staff the help desk, and respond to questions as directed by the task lead - Maintain and update the archive metrics reporting system - Development of archive software infrastructure tools, as directed by the task lead - Assume responsibility for data ingestion when the lead for that role is unavailable
Other job duties will include:
- Develop and implement continuous integration capabilities for projects supported by IPAC - Develop and implement Build and Test Environment configuration systems
Preferred Qualifications - Expertise with Unix-flavored development environments, and Unix/Linux systems administration - Familiarity with astrophysics archives and astronomical calculations - Experience with developing automated tests; experience with user interface testing - Experience with database design, database query languages (SQL), and administering Relational Database Management Systems such as Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL - Experience with continuous integration systems such as Jenkins - Experience with system configuration tools such as Ansible - Experience with configuring, deploying, and monitoring Amazon Web Services - Experience with generating metrics for development, test, and operations
